Wet winter delays skate park opening

Skateboarders will have to wait a little longer to hit the pavement

at their newest venue.

The Volcom Skate Park of Costa Mesa, built by the city and

sponsored by local skate-clothing giant Volcom, won’t be ready to

open until late June, city recreation manager Jana Ransom said

Thursday. A grand opening celebration is set for Aug. 4.

The skate park at TeWinkle Park was scheduled to open at the end

of May, but contractors couldn’t make up all the time lost to an

unusually wet winter.

Some work remains to be done, including landscaping, though that

won’t delay the park opening.

Using sod is costly, and the city doesn’t have the money, so the

ground around the park will have to be seeded unless someone donates

the estimated $15,000 cost for sod, Ransom said.
