HUNTINGTON BEACH

HB WAHINE FIVE-DAY CAMP SURFING EXPERIENCE

This camp will be offered Monday through Friday, beginning June

20and run weekly throughout the summer.

The popular wahine camp will have a new twist this summer, as a

separate boys’ camp also will be offered.

For $249, campers will learn basic fundamentals to become

self-sufficient in the water and improve their surfing skills. The

five-day program includes surfboard and wetsuit usage; stand-up

techniques; paddling skills; one-on-one coaching; certificate of

completion; T-shirt from HB Wahine; awards ceremony; group

activities; beach safety; ocean conservation and surf etiquette, plus

group and individual photos.

HB Wahine also offers a Two-Day Camp Surf Experience, which is

held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, now

through the end of summer.

This camp, which costs $118 per participant, is for the young

surfer who wants to give surfing a try and learn the basics of the

sport and build strong skills.

The weekend program includes the same benefits to its campers as

the five-day camp.

CORKY CARROLL’S

SURF SCHOOL

This school will offer a summer surf camp from June 13 through

Sept. 2. Twelve one-week sessions will be held at Bolsa Chica State

Beach at lifeguard Tower 18. Camps are set up for full-week, weekly

half-day and daily rates, each at different prices.

Sign-ups after Friday for the upcoming week are subject to late

fees.

BILLABONG CAMPS

Billabong will host the HB Surf Camp for youth ages 8 to 18 and of

all skill levels, beginning with the first of 10 weeklong sessions on

June 20.

The final session will run Aug. 22 to 26.

Campers can learn to surf or learn the ropes of taking surfing to

the next level. Each week’s session begins with orientation and

safety tips, followed immediately by training and surf instruction.

Campers will be able to get tips from local Billabong Team Riders,

including Huntington Beach pro Danny Nichols, and they will finish

off their week’s session with a fun surf contest, complete with

prizes and goodie bags from Billabong.

The cost is $295 per camper. Each weekly session runs from 8:30

a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

M&M; SURFING SCHOOL

Small group and private lessons are available for beginning and

intermediate surfers who will surf spots in Huntington Beach. For

SUPER SURF CAMP

Presented by the California Junior Lifeguard Programs, this camp

teaches everything from the basic skills necessary to get you up and

surfing, to more advanced techniques that will enrich the surfing

experience. The north Orange County camp is held at Pacific Coast

Highway and Warner Avenue in Sunset Beach and is open to surfers ages

8 to adult. Weekly camps are open from June 20 through Sept. 2. from

9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call

NEWPORT BEACH

QUIKSILVER SURF CAMPS

Learn to surf or improve your surfing skills in this summer’s surf

camp with Erik Nelsen’s Ocean Adventure Program.

Campers will learn from a CPR-certified staff of instructors,

focusing on surfing technique, ocean safety, surf etiquette and will

learn first-hand about such ocean science topics as waves and tides,

marine biology, coastal ecology and beach profiles. The cost is $475

per week per child. Each week concludes with a pizza party and

goodie-bag handout.

SOUTH COAST

Private and group lessons are offered through this school with a

price range from $50 to $300. Among the features of this school are

water and weather safety, learning about tides and how to track

waves. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and no experience is

JAIME’S SURF SCHOOL

Private and group lessons are offered to beginners to advanced

surfers in this school that places an emphasis on water safety and

NEWPORT SURF SCHOOL

This school, open to surfers ages 10 and older, offers private and

semi-private lessons and is conducted by the Newport Beach Pier on

Balboa Peninsula. Summer hours are 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 9 to 10:30 a.m.

weekdays, from June 15 to Sept. 15. Weekend and holiday classes also

are available from 7 to 7:30 a.m. Boards and wetsuits are provided.

LAGUNA BEACH

BILLABONG CAMP

The Laguna Beach Surf School is run through the Laguna Beach

Recreation Department and is offered to kids 8 and older interested

in learning about the fundamentals of surfing and the elements of the

ocean around them.

The program is offered in weekly sessions, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,

Monday through Friday, throughout the summer months, at a cost of

$450 per camper.

The school is at Thalia Street Beach. The student drop-off and

pick-up location is the Second Reef Surf Shop, 1020 South Coast Highway.

Campers spend the week surfing with peers who are of the same age

or skill level. A low staff-to-student ratio of 1 to 4 guarantees

students thorough instruction throughout the week.

Laguna Beach lifeguards are on duty all day long, and all camp

instructors are First Aid and CPR certified to ensure campers’

safety.

School dates are: Session 1 (July 11-15); Session 2 (July 18-22);

Session 3 (July 25-29); Session 4 (Aug 1-5); Session 5 (Aug 8-12);

Session 6 (Aug 15-19); Session 7 (Aug 22-26); Session 8 (Aug 29- Sept

2).

ALOHA SCHOOL OF SURFING

This school is committed to helping men, women and children

develop the skills and techniques of surfing, whether they are new to

the sport or want to fine tune their fundamentals. Emphasis is placed

on the development of skills and the knowledge and appreciation of

the ocean by offering professional instruction from a staff of

surfers, including James Pribram of Laguna Beach.

While no experience is necessary, each camper must be able to

swim.

SOUL SURFING SCHOOL

Both five- and two-day camps are available for youths 8 to 14.

Camps are designed to give kids a solid foundation to experience the

thrill of surfing. Equipment is included, and each camper will

receive a surf goodie bag with a surf T-shirt, stickers and other

surf-related items. The goal of the camp is for each student to form

a lifelong relationship with the ocean. An additional camp location

is Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington Beach. For more information,
