Breakers take care of Trojans
The Laguna Beach High baseball team capped its 2005 homestand Monday
with a 5-3 victory over the University Trojans in a Pacific Coast
League contest.
Noah Brewster hit a three-run home run, starter Calvin Mead got
the win and Jeff Bolar recorded a save with a seventh inning pitching
stint for the Breakers.
Laguna (5-9 in league) matched University by scoring a run in the
first inning.
Trailing 1-0, Ryan Landry hit a two-out single, then stole second
base. Then Brewster, as he has throughout the season with runners in
scoring position, delivered an RBI single to tie the score.
After giving up that first inning run to the Trojans, Mead settled
down on the mound and proceeded to put University down in order over
the next three innings.
In the forth inning, Laguna pushed another run across the plate to
take the lead for good.
Landry started the inning with double, moved to third on
Brewster’s fly out to right field, and scored when Kevin Kelly hit a
ground ball to the right side to make it 2-1.
University scored its second run in the fifth inning to forge
another tie, and had momentum snatched when Laguna’s infield turned a
double play to end any further scoring opportunities.
Laguna then took the momentum of that play and put the game away
in the bottom-half of the inning.
Mead led off the inning with single and moved to second on a wild
pitch, Landry walked and Brewster followed with a monster, three-run
home run over the left field fence.
Bolar then came on in the seventh inning and put the Trojans down
in order to pick up the save.
Michael Selevan also doubled for the Breakers.
Laguna and University met again Wednesday at University in the
regular season finale for both schools.
Previously at Skip Carrillo Field, Laguna suffered a 13-0 defeat
to league champion Tesoro.
The visiting Titans racked up 22 hits in a dominating victory.
Kelly, Garrett Rauch and Jon Begay each singled for Laguna.
