Minor A

Cubs 7, Pirates 6: Josh Tierney drove in the winning run in the

top of the eighth inning with a double to left center in the Costa

Mesa National Minor-A Cubs’ 7-6 victory over the Pirates Saturday.

Tierney then struck out three in the bottom of the inning to

preserve the victory in the game that was postponed because of

darkness earlier in the week. After the completed extra-inning game,

the teams played again, with the Cubs winning, 11-1. Chad Fackler, Jake Stone and Lucas De La Torre each slammed doubles to lead the

Cubs’ strong offense.

The Cubs game ball was awarded to Ray Barkis, who returned after

missing several games with a broken thumb. Barkis stopped a line

drive at second and tossed the ball to the shortstop for an

impressive out.

Cubs 8, Cardinals 7: Earlier in the week, the Cubs rallied with

three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Cardinals, 8-7.

Josh Tierney and Riley Stack started the rally with doubles, Tierney

scoring on Stack’s double and Stack scoring on a wild pitch. Jared

Payzant and Chad Fackler each singled, before Jake Stone’s line drive

to center field drove in the winning run.

Minor B

Cardinals 15, White Sox 4: Cardinals’ pitchers Adam Ditt, Nick

Arias and Garrett Kahre shut down the White Sox in a Minor-B division

game. Ditt had two strikeouts and Arias had six strikeouts and caught

a fly ball for the last out of the third inning. Kahre closed the

deal by striking out two and throwing to Garet Henscheid at first

base for the last out of the game.

Kahre had three singles and one RBI while Chase Whittaker had a

single, a double and two RBIs. Eric Molina had two singles and two

RBIs, and Jackson Letterman had two singles and an RBI. Daniel

Hernandez had two singles and two RBIs. Henscheid had two singles, a

double and four RBIs.

T-ball

Rockies, Marlins: The T-ball Rockies’ defense made several

impressive plays against the Marlins. Second baseman Travis Hastings

kept his focus and caught an infield pop up, while Ian Fowler tagged

several runners out at second base.

Justin Martinez made a key play when he beat the runner to third

for a force out. Blake Hunt, Rikky Hernandez and Raleigh Lynaugh also

made key plays on the field.

Connor Hamm delivered solid hits to advance runners during the

first and second innings while Nick Hendricks, Christian Muniz,

Christian Pruitt and Gage Grupenhagen each tallied hits for the

Rockies.

Braves, Giants: The T-ball Braves’ Sarah Bordelon threw out a

runner at first, and Joey Wakely and Cameron Schirmer also made solid

plays for outs. Liam Jason, Sophie Beazley, Mat Rogers and Kevin Volk

added to the defense with key plays, while Gavin Kane, Nicolas

Favela, Rohan Ronvelia and Daniel Fortin had big hits.

Newport Beach Little League

Majors

Yankees 8, Giants 3: The Yankees erupted for six runs in the third

inning to break open a close game and went on to defeat the Giants,

8-3. After Jack Reed and Kiefer Cohen reached base, three consecutive

doubles by Zach Socoloske, Eric Morris and Chase Favreau plated four

runs.

Sam Cubeiro then smacked a two-run homer to left to complete the

rally.

Also contributing to the Yankees’ offense were Brian Ford, Reign

DeLuca, Chip Zucker and Eric Hallett. Peter Markel, Zucker and Ford

made key plays in the infield, while Yankee pitchers Morris and

Cubeiro combined to record nine strikeouts while allowing six hits.

Jed Thayer notched six strikeouts in three innings of work for the

Giants, led offensivley by Josh Harrison, Nicholas Mannig, Danny

Borg-Sundstrom, Traglia and Thayer.

A’s 5, Diamondbacks 4: Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the

fourth inning, the A’s scored two runs on consecutive hits by John

Prickett, Spencer Haly and Greg Allen. In the bottom of the fifth,

the A’s scored two more runs to tie the game at 4 on an RBI double by

Bryce Ashton to score Mitch Gardner, who had singled earlier in the

inning. Ashton scored the tying run on a wild pitch later in the

inning. Prickett led off with a walk and moved to second on Allen’s

single. Prickett came home to score the winning run on Brent Lawson’s

single to center field. The A’s were helped by a 4-6-3 double play in

the top of the sixth, completed by Drew Blumenthal and Gardner.

Gardner and Ashton each pitched three innings for the A’s. The

Diamondbacks were led by Grant Davis who had three hits.

NBLL Red Sox 7, CMNLL Angels 2: Camden Nicholson pitched an entire

seven-inning game with 11 strikeouts, allowing just three hits and

two unearned runs in a Newport Beach Little League Pony division win

over the Costa Mesa National Little League Angels.

The Red Sox offense was led by William Ham, who had clutch RBI

hits, and Mason Sayer and Camden Nicholson, who each had two hits

with triples to left field.

Buckey Keligian, Blake Miller and Kyle Hill added hits for the

offense, while Blake made a tough second-inning outfield catch

looking into the sun. Shane Roddy, Chris Alvarez and Anthony Mainero

helped with the defense.

Newport Harbor Baseball Association

New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians: The Yankees led the game with

solid defense, sparked by Matthew Brodie, Shane Mitchell, Dillon

Murphy, Vinny Bartolone and Alden Burke with solid plays on well-hit

balls. During the first three innings, Brodie and Murphy made double

plays, while Mitchell, Burke and Bartolone followed up with throwing

out runners to end the innings.

Offensively, Carter Scott, Sean Flores, Matthew Alessi, Hunter

Warmington, and Quiton McKay showed strong skills, hitting and

running the bases effectively throughout the game.

Pinto

Indians, Yankees: The Indians were led by Toni Holland with two

solid catches that she turned into double plays. Adam Freeman clubbed

a grand slam and Jeremiah Sheldon added a three-run blast to pace the

Indian offense. Cameron Jabara, Jack Rapillo, Danny Clark, Julian

Fadden, Kingston Mc Carthy and Jonathan Boothe each had multi-hit

games coupled with solid defense.

The Yankees also played effective defense, including a double play

by first baseman Dillon Murphy. Several other members of the team

also made solid catches and recorded several force outs. Slugger

Shane Mitchell had a multi-hit game but lost what appeared to be a

home run by dazzling second-inning catch by Indian left fielder

Holland.

Angels 15, Rangers 3: After scoring a mere six runs and yielding

only two runs in their last four games, the Angels’ offense exploded

against the league-leading Rangers. The Angels’ scoring began in the

first when Michael Keasey walked and Cort Hastings singled. Two

batters later, Nathan Brown singled, scoring one run that was

followed by Brandon Pick’s shot off the wall to score two more.

Frasier Anderson and Matt Burt had consecutive singles and Austin

Barvin walked, making the lead, 6-0. Keasey and Hastings drove in two

more for an eight- run, first-inning lead. Baron Brown, Sandon

Griffin and Daniel Noto also had hits in the game.

The Rangers’ offense was led by Zach Murtaugh, Conor Roche,

Brennan Anderson, Darren Hardy and Allen Brown who all tallied hits.

Griffin pitched four innings recording seven strikeouts and the win

for the Angels.

Angels 17 Dodgers 8: The Angels hot-hitting continued with a 17-

run, 14-hit performance against the Dodgers. The Angels started early

with three runs in the first inning when Nathan Wagner singled,

Sandon Griffin and Daniel Noto doubled, and Nathan Brown singled

consecutively. They scored three more in the third with consecutive

hits by Brown, Matt Burt and Nick Mathews. Austin Barvin and Michael

Keasey also had hits as the Angels scored 11 runs over the final

three innings.

Jack Presson, Trent Anderson, Andrew Machoskie and Ryan Banning

all had hits to pace the Dodger attack. Wagner pitched three

scoreless innings for the Angels and Griffin and Noto each finished

with three hits.

Shetland National Dodgers, Shetland National Pirates: Ryan Fecko

started the Dodgers’ hitting with a hit into center field, while

Spencer Lawrence blasted a shot into right field. Nolan McElhaney was

4 for 4 at the plate, while Kelley Holgate, Cole Pender, Jordan

Paczad made solid defensive plays.

Bobby McCracken, Corbin Joyce and Alex Forman led the Pirates.

SOCCER

All-stars

Girls under-12

The Newport Beach girls under-12 all-star soccer team clinched

first place Saturday after finishing 6-1, led by season performances

from Mo Usman and George Piscine. The team combined to score 22 goals

throughout the season while allowing none against them.

The team is composed of Aneesha Usman, Chelsie Delameter,

Alexandra Holbrook, Sara Vetrove,c Shayanne Usman, Kayla Greely,

Carly Sorensen, Remi Pascine, Katie Noblett, Madison Walsh, Lani

McCardle, Lexi McCardle, Alex Whiting, Lauren Clemence and Kaylee

Coopersmith.

AYSO Region 97

Boys under-13

Newport Mesa Infinity: The Newport-Mesa boys under-13 AYSO club

team Infinity lost two games over the weekend to the first- and

second-place teams in the spring league. Juan Gonzalez scored

Infinity’s only goal. Strong play by Raymundo Sollano, Erickson

Klein, Zac Chocek and Dillan Freiberg created several good chances

for NM.

Girls under-10

Red Rockets, Firecrackers: Madison Mastera and Elissia Schilling

scored with assists from McKenna Johnson and Gianna Light, while

Savannah Vrbas and Livvie Muscatello tirelessly controlled the

centerfield. Kailen Locke and Jenna Jarvis defended the goal with

Andria Spears.

Girls under-8

Purple Fire Girls, Green Leprechauns: The Purple Fire Girls were

led by Natalie Ward and Kaitlyn Hebert as both girls scored two

goals. The play of Lindzy Konrad and Gigi Woodall was tremendous for

the Purple Fire Girls. Both girls contributed to the tough defense

and played solid games for the Purple Fire Girls. Players Kate

Hefner, Gaby Findlay, Kara Carlson, Katie Conway, and Michelle

Dunchus played strong on offense and defense.

Boys under-8

Fireball Blasters, White Lightening: The Fireball Blasters

exploded in a team effort against White Lightening. Fireball’s solid

offense was led by Sargis Srapyan, Cooper Hendrix, Nicholas Carey,

Brandt Walton and Ea Olotoa. Hunter Feduska and Cade Walton played a

tough defensive game.

Girls under-6

Green Lightning: Erika Ellis scored twice in the first quarter for

Green Lightning before dropping back to play solid defense. Riley De

Castroverde made a full-field run at the goal, punching the ball just

to the right of the goal. Paula Padrani, Lauren Henke, Nikki Sanchez

and Caroline Wilkes also dribbled well, narrowly missing scoring

opportunities.
