SCATS gymnasts claim gold medals
Gymnasts from SCATS in Huntington Beach laid claim to gold medals in
various team competitions at the State Championships held in Santa
Ana.
Coached by Albert Avchian, Grigor Chalikyan and Mitchell Claman,
the SCATS boys’ squad won medals and individual titles in Level 6, 7
and 10 competition, which is overseen by the U.S.A. Gymnastics
organization.
Level 6
Alex Anunciation grabbed gold on the vault and the high bar in
becoming an all-around state champion.
Kanji Oyama was right behind Anunciation in second place and
earned an additional silver medal on rings.
The performances of Jonah Urlaub, Aaron Yoshizuka and Oliver
Walton contributed to the team’s first-place award.
Level 7
Sam Mikulak and Joshua Glenn each won all-around titles.
Mikulak won gold on vault and parallel bars, while Glenn gained
gold in four events: pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar.
Adrian de los Angeles won gold on floor and rings. Jesse Glenn won
gold on pommel horse and Jacob Glen won gold on rings.
Level 10
Glen Ishino won the high bar en route to becoming a state
all-around champion.
Andrew Stover and Jason Chu were right behind Ishino in the
all-around competition standings. Stover won gold on rings and Chu
came away with gold on rings, vault and high bar.
Jason Laughton won gold for his outstanding pommel horse
performance.
Also contributing to the Level 10 team trophy were Darryl Garris,
Francisco Grey and Jonathan Grey.
In other State Championships competition, SCATS boys’ Level 5 team
finished in fifth place overall. Team members Cameron Gorman, Clark
Pitti and Brandon Loschiavo’s all-around scores contributed to the
most prestigious honor in boys’ junior Olympic gymnastics -- the Iron
Man award, which totals two all-around scores at each level.
In youth softball:
Sluggers, 8; Angels, 6
Rebecca Swartz hit her first home run of the season and Erin
Dunneback delivered a game-tying home run, as the Surf City Sluggers
defeated the H.B. Angels.
Taylor Hickman singled twice and Nicole McLendon, Alexea Lopez and
catcher Alison Andrew sparked the Sluggers defensively.
Bailey Murchison saw first-time action on the mound this season
for the Sluggers, and Jennifer Snyder saw relief action.
