Welch brothers power Sea King sweep
Senior Tom Welch had 14 kills, four blocks and nine digs to lead the
Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team in a 26-24, 25-22, 25-12
sweep of visiting Tesoro Tuesday in Pacific Coast League action.
Welch’s twin brother, Kevin, recorded 11 kills, three aces and
four blocks for the Sea Kings (16-5, 2-0 in league). Scott Slaughter
had five kills and two blocks while Ted Slaughter had five kills and
three blocks. Phil Bannon had 31 assists.
Tars sweep Irvine
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Brett Perrine registered a
team-high nine kills to help lead the Newport Harbor High boys
volleyball team to a 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 Sea View League victory over
host Irvine Tuesday.
Perrine also finished with five service aces and one block as the
Sailors improve to 7-8, 2-0 in league. Blake Newman added four kills
and a service ace as Weston Dunlap, Brett Auer and Kyle Caldwell each
had three kills. Ted Slater had 23 assists.
Sea Kings stroll along
* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team claimed all
nine doubles sets and strolled to a 16-2 Pacific Coast League victory
over visiting Tesoro Tuesday.
Spencer Reitz and partner Jonathan Kroopf improved to 13-2 this
season with a sweep while Matt Chou and Ryan Caughren, along with
Alex Nguyen and Sean Pham, all won three times. Senior Wesley Miller
and freshman Fabian Mathews swept in singles for CdM (10-1, 2-0 in
league).
Tars pound Irvine
* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High boys tennis team cruised past
host Irvine, 16-2, Tuesday in a Sea View League match.
Jake Fleming, Dylan Espley-Jones and John Hutchinson did not lose
a game in the singles sets for the Sailors (2-5, 2-0 in league).
Derek Davis and Brandon Chase swept their opponents in doubles
action.
UCI tops UNLV
* BASEBALL: UC Irvine’s baseball team defeated host UNLV, 11-2, in
a nonconference game Tuesday, with Jaime Martinez going 3 for 3 at
the plate with five RBIs for the Anteaters (13-11).
Pemstein works magic
* GOLF: Senior Davis Pemstein shot a 1-over-par 37 to win medalist
honors for the third consecutive match and the visiting Newport
Harbor High boys golf team defeated Irvine, 197-240, in Sea View
League play Tuesday at Oak Creek Golf Club. He birdied the ninth
hole.
Brandon Sowers (38), Rhett Palmer (39), Spencer Quinn (40) and
Chris Willard (43) all scored for Newport (6-5, 3-1 in league).
Kaake carries UCI
* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team defeated host
Cal State Northridge, 4-3, Tuesday in a Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation match.
Sophomore Robyn Kaake scored all four goals for UCI (11-9, 4-5 in
the federation).
Two-out hits boost Bucs
* BASEBALL: Sophomore right hander Steven Johns struck out six and
walked three in six innings to improve to 2-1 this season following
Orange Coast College’s 8-3 nonconference baseball victory over host
Glendale Tuesday.
Ricky Stokes (2 for 5, two RBIs) and Stephen Schneider (2 for 4,
two RBIs) both tallied two-out singles that each brought in a pair of
runs to key Coast’s 13-hit attack.
Tesoro stymies CdM
* BASEBALL: Tesoro High’s Bryan Evans allowed six hits in 6 2/3
innings and went 2 for 4 with a home run as the Titans defeated host
Corona del Mar, 7-2, in a Pacific Coast League contest Tuesday.
Corona del Mar (8-3, 4-1 in league) lost to Tesoro (8-4, 5-0) for
the first time in eight tries.
Breakers beat Mesa
* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team lost,
25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, Tuesday at Laguna Beach in a nonleague
match.
Errors hurt CdM
* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team lost to visiting
Tesoro, 3-1, Tuesday in both teams’ Pacific Coast League opener.
Sophomore pitcher Michelle Tolfa scattered six hits, struck out
six and added a solo home run for CdM (6-6, 0-1 in league).
Newport is swept
* TRACK AND FIELD: Both the girls and boys Newport Harbor High
track and field teams lost to Aliso Niguel in a Sea View League dual
meet Tuesday.
The boys lost, 82-54, and the girls lost, 81-55.
Titans crash CdM
* GOLF: The perennial powerhouse Tesoro High boys golf team
defeated visiting Corona del Mar, 208-219, in a Pacific Coast League
match Tuesday at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club. Ben Tilsen and
Jamie Bloom led the Sea Kings (4-4, 2-1) with 42s.
UCI finishes fifth
* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished fifth after rain
forced cancellation of Tuesday’s final round in the 59th annual
Western Intercollegiate tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa
Cruz.
