Davis, Priestly shine
Grant Davis and Max Priestly powered the Newport Beach Little League
Diamondbacks to a 12-6 opening-day victory over the Mariners in a
Majors baseball game March 5.
Davis had a single, double and a triple with four RBIs, while
Priestly had two RBIs. Garrett Larson pitched the final two innings,
while Andrew Cleary, Matt Livingston, Alex Stecca and Grant Davis
also pitched throughout the game. Matt Berry made a key defensive
play to stop a Mariner rally.
Chris Freeman contributed a double with an RBI, while pitching two
hitless innings to lead the Mariners.
In Costa Mesa National Little League action:
* Mets 10, Cardinals 4
The Costa Mesa National Little League Mets opened their season
with a 10-4 victory over the Cardinals Saturday in a Minor A baseball
game. Jesse Paz, Christian Aguilar and Spencer Owens led the pitching
staff, while Paz, Owens, Aguilar, Brandon Kingsley and Matt Thomas
all contributed hits for the Mets. Daniel Lee made a key defensive
play.
* Dodgers 13, Pirates 6
The Dodgers used solid pitching performances from Dante Capoccia,
Bill Crosson and Tyler Owens to help earn a 13-6 opening-day win over
the Pirates in a Minor B baseball game Saturday.
Crosson was 2 for 4 at the plate with three runs scored. Estefany
Ramirez and Nick Halloran each had two RBIs.
* Rockies, Mets
The Rockies and Mets went head-to-head in opening-day tee ball
game Saturday, with Nick Hendricks, Connor Hamm, Christian Muniz,
Gage Grupenhagen and Ian Fowler leading the Rockies offensively.
Blake Hunt, Christian Pruitt, Justin Martinez, Raleigh Lynaugh,
Christian Ferrara and Travis Hastings led the defense.
In Newport Harbor Baseball Association action:
* PRES Companies 9, Wells Fargo 4
PRES Companies earned a 9-4 victory over Wells Fargo in a Mustang
division baseball game Saturday. Cory Kroeger pitched for PRES and
Brad Tapfer pitched for Wells Fargo, while Marco Brucha and Max
Zielinski’s offense led directly to PRES’ victory. Riley Petterson
and Garrett Hall pitched the last few innings for both teams.
* Dodgers, Rockies
Mikey Lugo had a grand slam and Liam Ogburn had a three-run homer
to lead the Dodgers in a Pinto National baseball game Saturday. Blake
Olinger and Jacob Chandler each had a solid game for the Dodgers.
* Wide Open Sport Fishing 7, Islands 6
Jason Rodriguez scored the winning RBI to lead Wide Open Sport
Fishing past Islands, 7-6, in a Mustang division baseball game
Saturday.
Daniel Albert pitched three innings, while also scoring two runs
and two RBIs Dalton Jensen hit an RBI triple to tie the game before
Rodriguez’s game-winning hit. Ken Suzuki, Timmy Ditty and Stephen
Keenan all contributed to the win.
Chase Kapana, Nicolas Sargeant and Mitchell Mendoza led Islands.
* Back Bay Funding 6, Creative Play 5
Kory Cably had two hits and three RBIs to lead the offensive
attack with Zachary Wade, Cole Chapin and Bryan Shollin in Back Bay
Funding’s 6-5 opening-day win over Creative Play in a Mustang
division baseball game Saturday.
Wade, Chapin and Shollin each scored runs, while Kyle Flagg had a
single and a run scored on a Jake Prater RBI. Garrett Byers made a
key catch near the end, and Nathan Mayhugh and Robert Lyons also had
solid performances.
Creative Play was led by Taylor Parks, Josh Riveria, Zach
Cornwell, Sean Perrier and Diego Morales. Sean Cox pitched for
Creative Play.
* Grower’s Direct 6, Toes on the Nose 4
Grower’s Direct earned a 6-4 victory over Toes on the Nose
Saturday in an opening-day Mustang division baseball game Saturday.
Shane MacGilfrey pitched for Grower’s, allowing one run in two
innings. Brenan Goodwin pitched the third and fourth innings, while
TK McWhertor closed the game.
Shaun Vetrovec led Grower’s offense, while MacGilfrey, McWhertor
and TJ Eleinko also contributed. Chase Whiting and Anotonio Rossi had
solid defensive performances.
* Arches 7, Newport Auto Center 6
Pitchers Nelson Simons, Tyler Kiehnle and Blake Bell led the
Arches to a 7-6 win over Newport Auto Center in a Bronco division
baseball game Saturday.
The Arches scored seven runs in the third inning with hits from
Zack Porteous, Simons, Kiehnle, Ryan Cerrato, Christian Ochoa and
Jake Barber. Newport Auto Center scored six runs in the fourth and
fifth innings with hits and runs from Austin Rios, Brett Parker, Zack
Beaudin and Kevin Kruger.
