Gattis sparks Orange Coast
Gary Gattis was 2 for 5 with three RBIs in the visiting Orange Coast
College baseball team’s 7-3 victory over Fullerton in Orange Empire
Conference play Tuesday.
Luke Beck was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a triple for the
Pirates (8-7, 2-1 in the OEC), while Robbie Blauer was 2 for 4 with
one run scored and an RBI.
Fullerton’s Aaron Randall hit a home run in the fifth inning, but
the Hornets (11-3, 1-2) couldn’t overcome OCC’s three-run fifth
inning.
CdM flies by Monarchs
* TENNIS: Both Wesley Miller and Fabian Mathews swept their sets
at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to lead the Corona del Mar
High boys tennis team to a 14-4 nonleague victory over Mater Dei.
Miller and Fabian both eked by Mater Dei’s Chris Kearney, 7-5,
while all three doubles teams (Matt Chou-Ryan Caughren, Spencer
Reitz-Jonathon Kroopf and Alex Nguyen-Robert Koury) won two sets.
Estancia tops Marina
* GOLF: Juniors Marcus Sostak and Garrett McMasters each shot
6-over-par 42 to earn co-medalist honors as the Estancia High boys
golf team improved to 2-1 with a 221-226 nonleague victory over
visiting Marina at Mesa Verde Country Club Tuesday.
Pat Flannery (44), Greg Les (46) and Austin Serr (47) also scored
for Estancia, which features four returning All-Golden West League
players. Sostak won the league individual title last year.
Newport bests Western
* GOLF: Senior Davis Pemstein shot par to earn medalist honors and
lead the Newport Harbor High boys golf team to a 183-218 victory over
host Western at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim Tuesday.
Pemstein shot 35 with one birdie and one bogey, while seniors
Rhett Palmer and Brandon Sowers shot one-over-par 36 for the Sailors
(2-1). Chris Willard and Andrew Skjonsby both shot 38.
Vanguard is perfect
* TENNIS: All six singles players and all three doubles teams won
as the Vanguard University women’s tennis team improved to 11-0, 9-0
in the Golden State Athletic Conference following a 9-0 victory over
visiting Hope at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center Tuesday.
Jenny Edner, Alena Votavova and Olivia Amstad all won their
singles sets without losing a game, while Amy Brown and Kristen
Eichenmuller both won, 6-1, 6-0. Damia Donkerfoort won, 6-1, 6-1.
Mesa downs Amigos
* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa High baseball team gave up four runs to
visiting Los Amigos in the seventh inning but escaped, 7-6, in both
teams’ third game of pool play in the Newport Elks tournament
Tuesday.
Senior Steven Mendez finished 2 for 3 with a double and two runs
scored for the Mustangs (3-0), while senior Dylan Hunter was 2 for 3
with and RBI and two runs scored. Alex Pisarsky hit 1 for 2 with an
RBI and two runs scored.
The Mustangs host Calvary Chapel at 3 p.m. Thursday in the
championship semifinals.
UCI women end streak
* TENNIS: Senior Anna Bentzer won her singles match, 6-0, 6-0, and
teamed with Inna Agababian for an 8-4 doubles victory as the host UC
Irvine women’s tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak with a
5-2 triumph over Yale Tuesday.
Senior Hui Leow and freshman Becky Bernhard’s 8-5 victory over
Stephanie White and Olivia Nix gave the Anteaters (5-7) a 1-0 lead
after doubles play.
OCC defeats Lasers
* TENNIS: The visiting Orange Coast College men’s tennis team
recorded an 8-1 victory over Irvine Valley College in Orange Empire
Conference play Tuesday.
All OCC singles players -- Coby Morita, Spencer Soloman, Jared
Haley, Hiroshi Muto, Scott Fielder and Victor Jacobs -- won their
sets, while the doubles teams of Soloman-Haley and Fielder-Muto also
won.
Pirates douse IVC
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team cruised to
a 9-0 victory over visiting Irvine Valley College Tuesday in Orange
Empire Conference action.
Michelle Esquival, Jessica Rice, Emily Paulson, Julie Haley, Ai
Takamori and Rachael Sessum all swept their singles sets for the
Pirates (7-0, 4-0 in the OEC).
CdM split three-way
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team beat San Clemente
but lost to host Aliso Niguel in a three-way meet Tuesday at El
Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel.
Aliso Niguel edged out the Sea Kings, 202-204, while CdM and San
Clemente tied, 204-204. The match was decided by the sixth golfer,
junior Cody Stuart, who shot a 10-over par 46 compared to San
Clemente’s sixth golfer who shot a 48.
Ben Tilsen shot a 38 for CdM (2-2). The senior’s second shot on
the 489-yard, par-5 sixth-hole landed five feet from the hole and he
converted the eagle putt.
Senior Matt Story and sophomore David Su both shot 40, while
senior Zach Rabinovich (42) and junior Jamie Bloom (46) also posted
scores.
Sage sweeps Bolsa
* SWIMMING: Both the boys and girls Sage Hill School swimming
teams defeated host Bolsa Grande in a nonleague meet Tuesday.
The girls won, 88-75, and improved to 2-1, while the boys won,
81-61, and improved to 1-2.
Placing first in their events for the girls were Whitney Gaglio,
Allison Grigonis, Stephanie Roeser, Sarah Wesley and Lauren Indvik.
On the boys side, sophomore Dan Chen won the 100-yard free in 53.7
and the 200 individual medley 2:20.
Junior Chase Caillouette won the 500 free in 6:17.4.
Eagles top Lightning
* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team lost to visiting
Santa Margarita, 11-7, in a nonleague match Tuesday at Balboa Bay
Club Racket Club.
Senior Tristan Cordier swept his sets at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2,
6-3, against two brothers and a cousin from the same family of Santa
Margarita (2-1), while sophomore Martin Park won two sets (6-4, 6-2)
for the Lightning (2-3), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section
Division V.
Sage visits Northwood at 3 p.m. today.
CdM loses in 10th
* BASEBALL: The visiting Corona del Mar High baseball team lost in
the 10th inning to Savanna, 1-0, in both teams’ third game of pool
play in the Newport Elks tournament Tuesday.
A CdM (1-2) error in the bottom of the 10th advanced the lone base
runner to third and a sacrifice fly brought him in for the win. Sea
Kings’ pitchers Austin Elliott, Ben Maggard and Matt Hauser gave up
three hits over 10 innings.
Eagles surge ahead
* SOFTBALL: Keile Brown went 4 for 5 with four runs scored and two
RBI as the seven Estancia High softball players tallied at least two
hits in a 22-0 nonleague victory in five innings over host Anaheim
Tuesday.
Muriel Mason struck out two in tossing a one-hitter while Allison
Wyman and Hilary Ockey each finished 3 for 4 with a combined four
RBIs and seven runs scored for the Eagles (2-1), who tallied 21 hits.
Heather Morton, Mason, Taylor Brown and Be Diep all had two hits
for the winners.
Aztecs drop UCI
* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team could only get one run in
the bottom of the ninth inning, when it needed three for a tie, and
fell to visiting San Diego State, 8-6, in nonconference play Tuesday
at Anteater Ballpark.
Erik Johnson went 3 for 4 with one run scored for UCI (9-7), while
both Tim Stewart and Cody Cipriano were 1 for 4.
SDSU (4-14) starting pitcher James Scott pitched five innings,
allowing five runs on two hits, but was credited the win. Andres
Esquibel pitched the ninth inning for the Aztecs, allowing one hit
and no runs for the save.
Calvary beats Newport
* BASEBALL: Tyler Keefe went 1 for 4 with a double and four RBIs
to help the visiting Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana baseball team send
Newport Harbor High to its first loss this season with a 6-3 victory
Tuesday in both teams’ final pool play game in the Newport Elks
tournament’s Costa Mesa bracket.
Keefe’s one-out double down the right-field line in the top of the
seventh brought in Calvary’s final two runs.
Newport (2-1) held a 2-1 lead until Calvary (3-0) scored three
runs in the top of the fifth. The Tars trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in
the bottom of the fifth on Skylar Cozad’s single to plate Chris
Thompson, who reached on a double.
Costa Mesa downed
* SOFTBALL: Costa Mesa High’s softball team gave up five runs in
the last three innings and lost to visiting Calvary Chapel, 8-2, in a
nonleague game Tuesday.
Senior Jackie Butler went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI to lead
the Mustangs (2-1), while Christy Gregory was also 2 for 4 with a
triple. But Mesa committed four errors.
Orange ekes out win
* TENNIS: The Estancia High boys tennis team lost in games to
visiting Orange, 78-70, in a Golden West League opener Tuesday. Scott
Braunsdorf won two sets at No. 1 singles for the Eagles (0-4, 0-1 in
league), while freshman Bradley Fisher won two sets at No. 2. The No.
2 doubles team of Cesar Gonzalez-Chris Alvergue also won two sets for
Estancia.
