Eagles sweep
Estancia High’s boys volleyball team swept visiting Servite, 25-11,
25-20, 25-18, in a nonleague match Thursday to open the season.
Junior Scott Markley, fresh off basketball season, had a
match-high 18 kills, while junior Dallas Kopp added eight kills and
10 digs. Senior setter Trevor Holmes had 25 assists and three aces,
and junior Ian Lamb had 10 digs.
Anteaters edge Baptist
* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team overcame a 1-0 deficit in
the third inning to defeat visiting Dallas Baptist, 2-1, in
nonconference action Thursday.
UCI center fielder Erik Johnson hit a home run and starting
pitcher Justin Cassel improved to 3-0 with the victory. Blair
Erickson picked up his third save for UCI.
The Anteaters (7-6) will face Dallas Baptist at 6 p.m. today and 1
p.m. Saturday.

Newport tops Beckman
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team defeated Beckman,
196-255, in a nonleague match Thursday at Tustin Ranch Golf Course.
Sophomore Justin Morehead earned medalist honors for the Sailors
(1-1), shooting a one-over-par 37. Newport Senior Brandon Sowers shot
a 38, while senior teammate Rhett Palmer shot 39.
Coast women rolling
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team dominated
in a 9-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over visiting Grossmont on
Thursday.
The Pirates (6-0, 3-0 in conference) won the first two doubles
points after an 8-0 victory from Michelle Esquival and Jessica Rice,
and an 8-1 victory from Rachael Sessum and Emily Paulson.
Monarchs down Sailors
* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor boys tennis team was defeated by
visiting Mater Dei in their first game of the season, 12-6, on
Thursday in a nonleague match.
Despite the effort in singles by Newport Harbor’s Robert Khoury,
and the No. 2 doubles team of Dylan Espley-Jones and Brandon Chase,
who won two sets, it was Mater Dei which took the victory with six
wins each in singles and doubles.

Cypress rips Pirates
* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team fell to host
Cypress, 20-4, in an Orange Empire Conference opener Thursday.
Cypress (9-4 overall) had its first 11 batters reach base safely,
and took a commanding 10-0 lead in the first inning.
Sophomore catcher Josh Banda had three RBIs for OCC, but it wasn’t
enough with Cypress’ 19 hits. OCC (6-7) will face Riverside at home
in OEC action on Saturday.
Webb downs Sage
* SWIMMING: The Sage Hill School girls swim team lost, 103-61, and
the boys lost, 116-53, to visiting Webb in the Lightning’s first home
meet Thursday night at Corona del Mar.
Individual girl winners for Sage Hill were Allison Grigonis
(2:28.07 in the 200-yard individual medley), Stephanie Roser (28:03
in 50 freestyle and 1:03.07 in the 100 free) and Whitney Gaglio
(1:12.25 in the 100 butterfly).
For Sage’s boys, Alex Nguyen finished first in the 100 backstroke
(1:05.0).
UCI stumbles on road
* BASKETBALL: The visiting UC Irvine women’s basketball team fell
into a three-way tie for seventh place in the Big West Conference
with one game regular-season contest remaining following a 79-53
defeat to UC Santa Barbara, which clinched its 10th straight
conference title with the victory.
Angie Ned tallied a team-high 18 points while Lauren Yadon grabbed
seven rebounds and added six points for the Anteaters (6-20, 5-12 in
conference), who are tied with Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton.
