‘The Best of Plein Air’ opening

The Laguna Plein Air Painters Assn.’s juried exhibit “The Best of

Plein Air” opens today with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. and an

awards ceremony at 7 p.m.

Juror Susan Anderson, an independent curator, former Laguna Art

Museum curator and acting director juried the 54 artists who were

selected. First, second and third place will be awarded. All artwork

was required to have been created in the plein air style, painted

outdoors in the tradition of the early California impressionist

painters.

Laguna Outreach’s art workshop today

Laguna Outreach Community Arts “Art Escapes” workshop will be the

first of a three-part ceramic workshop series, “Creativity with

Clay,” taught by esteemed artist Sherry Bullard. The class is

suitable for all artistic levels. Cost is $30, including materials.

Castillo in concert

at the Barclay

Master flamenco guitarist Emilio Castillo will perform as part of

his “Modern Gypsy” tour with a 20-piece orchestra and flamenco

dancers at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive

in Irvine. Castillo produces, writes and arranges his music and is

First Sunday’s classical guitarist

First Sundays, a collaboration between Laguna College of Art and

Design and Laguna Beach Live!, will start with the gallery exhibit

“Speculative Terrain” at 2 p.m. followed by a classical guitar

performance, featuring Lee Zimmer from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Arts Commission Banner Competition

The Arts Commission is accepting designs for its annual banner

competition with a deadline at 4 p.m. March 11. Artists are provided

with banner material to paint an original work. These 4- by 16-feet

canvas banners are hung Downtown for the summer.

Orange County residents only. Submit a color design, two maximum,

that is drawn to scale. The banner must have design on both sides.

Woman’s Club art show application

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach is accepting applications from

local women artists who want to exhibit their work in the Woman’s

Club’s fourth annual Art Show. The deadline to apply is March 11. The

art show will be held April 17 and 24. Exhibiting artists will be

asked to donate one piece for the art auction, with the proceeds

going to benefit Laguna Outreach Community Arts, an organization that

teaches art to underprivileged children. There is no cost to exhibit

art, and all types of arts and crafts are eligible. For information,

‘Art That’s Small at City Hall’ deadline

The Arts Commission is accepting entries for its fourth annual

“Art That’s Small at City Hall” competition from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

March 26 at the council chambers, 505 Forest Ave. The competition is

open to all Orange County residents. Works must be no longer than a

foot along any edge including the frame and 3 inches in depth. One

entry only with a $15 entry fee. First place receives $350, second

place $200, third place $50 and $50 for the City Hall choice winner.

The works will be exhibited March 28 through April 29 with an awards

ceremony and reception from 5 to 6 p.m. April 7. For information,

Sculpture Competition Village

The city of Laguna Beach Arts Commission is holding a sculpture

competition to add to the city’s public art collection. The

competition location is for the Village Green Park at the corner of

Monterey Street and Catalina Avenue. The subject should be inspired

by nature, figurative and visually appealing to children. A vertical

orientation is recommended. The piece must be no larger than 5-feet

wide and deep by a maximum of 7-feet tall. It should not have any

element that would entice a child to climb it or pose any other

safety concerns. Only original artwork, which may not be reproduced

should be submitted. Honorarium is $10,000. Deadline is April 29. For

‘Voodoo’ at Ocean Avenue Brewery

Laguna based ZUMA Press is exhibiting “Vivid Voodoo,” by

photojournalist Les Stone. Its a photographic display of Haiti’s

religion, rituals, sacrifice, possession and love at Ocean Avenue

Brewery, 237 Ocean Ave.

Stone, a ZUMA news photographer, has traveled to Haiti more than

30 times in 10 years. His work captures firsthand Haitian voodoo

ceremonies and practices.
