Clearing the college hurdles
Ketta Brown
This is usually a fairly quiet time at Laguna Beach High School and
this year is no different. Most students are focusing on upcoming
testing: state, standardized and AP. The seniors are concentrating on
getting scholarship essays written. It is encouraging to know that
more than 100 seniors applied for the local scholarships that are
available to our students. That is nearly 50% of the class. Many of
these scholarships are substantial and truly help with college
expenses. Each scholarship has a primary focus that allows many LBHS
students to participate no matter what area of interest they may
choose to pursue. I thank the community and the Scholarship
Foundation support of LBHS.
The school held the first-ever Community College Fair on Feb. 15
at the school. Although the attendance was not huge, it was a good
showing for a first time event. Community colleges from as far away
as Tahoe came to answer questions for our students and their parents.
As an added bonus, door prizes were awarded and Tahoe even gave away
two free ski passes! This event was smaller than the College Roundup
that is held in November, but filled a vital need for our students.
