‘Eater error costly again
A bases-loaded throwing error in the bottom of the ninth by the UC
Irvine baseball team allowed the game-winning run to cross for the
second time in as many days as the visiting Anteaters lost to
Clemson, 5-4, in a nonconference game Saturday at Doug Kingsmore
Stadium.
In the ninth, Tiger second baseman Taylor Harbin hit a one-out
double and advanced to third on a wild pitch by reliever Steve
Schroer. UCI (6-4) intentionally walked the next two batters,
bringing up Tyler Colvin to face sophomore Blair Erickson.
Colvin’s grounder to second baseman Brett Dalton was fielded
cleanly but his throw to shortstop Chad Lundahl -- in an effort to
start the double play near second base -- sailed wide, allowing
Harbin to score the winning run for the Tigers (3-2).
UC Irvine rallied from a 4-2 deficit with two in the ninth.
Lundahl drew a two-out walk and advanced to third on a double by
Dalton.
A balk allowed Lundahl to score, Cody Cipriano walked and Matt
Anderson singled in a run.
Anderson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run while first baseman
Jaime Martinez was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
