McGee breaks out for 34 in Sage victory
Freshman point guard Jamie McGee scored a career-high 34 points,
including 6 of 6 from three-point range, to power the Sage Hill
School boys basketball team to a 62-43 victory over Pilgrim in a
consolation semifinal of the St. Anthony’s tournament in Long Beach
Wednesday.
Sage (12-2), which has won nine of its past 10 games, faces
Renaissance Academy for the consolation championship at 1:30 p.m.
today at St. Anthony’s High.
McGee finished 13 of 16 shooting (81.2%) and tallied 29 of his 34
points in the second and third quarters before sitting out the fourth
period. Senior Matt Loper added 18 points and eight rebounds while
Tim Lefler tallied six assists and two steals for the Lightning.

Newport moves to final
* BASKETBALL: Taylor Young had a game-high 25 points and 13
rebounds to lead the Newport Harbor High boys basketball team to a
70-54 victory of Chula Vista in the semifinals of the Chula Vista
tournament Wednesday at Chula Vista High in San Diego County.
Brett Perrine added 18 points and Alex Orth hit seven for the
Sailors (7-6), who have moved above .500 for the first time this year
after starting the season 0-4. The Sailors took advantage of dominant
second and third quarters in which they outscored the Spartans,
44-27.
Newport plays in the championship game against Vista tonight at 8.
OCC advances to final
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team
held off a late rally and defeated Palomar College, 65-64, in the
semifinal game of the Palomar tournament Wednesday at Palomar
College.
Valerie Katayama had 19 points, including four three-pointers for
the Pirates, while Lauren Stepanski added 13 points.
Coast (9-5) plays Irvine Valley in the championship game today at
3 p.m.
Hardison scores four
* SOCCER: Sophomore forward Allan Hardison scored four goals to
lead the Corona del Mar High boys soccer team to a 6-2 victory over
La Serna in both teams’ first game of pool play in the West Coast
Classic Wednesday at Irvine Valley College.
Hardison scored in the 38th, 39th, 45th and 72nd minutes to help
boost CdM (4-2-2) to its fourth win of the season. Nick Ossipoff and
Shane Collins (penalty kick) each added scores while CdM goalkeeper
Andrew Dailynas finished with three saves.
CdM continues pool play when it faces Servite this morning at 7
and De La Salle at 2 p.m.
CdM earns seventh
* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team earned
seventh place in the Wyoming tournament by defeating Rigby of Idaho,
60-43, Wednesday at Campbell County High in Gillette, Wyo.
Ted Slaughter had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Lance was
selected to the all-tournament team for the Sea Kings (5-8), who play
at Canyon Monday at 7 p.m.
Lions blitz Bethany
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard women’s basketball team steamrolled
Bethany, 120-34, during the first day of the Golden State Athletic
Conference tournament Wednesday at Azusa Pacific University.
Kelly Schmidt led the way for Vanguard (10-1) with 30 points.
Sage downs Dominguez
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team used a
strong first half to ride to a 32-27 victory over visiting Dominguez
in a 13th place semifinal game of the Costa Mesa tournament Wednesday
at Costa Mesa High.
The Lightning (3-5) play for 13th place today against Westminster
at noon.
Junior Haywood Wright had 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals
and two blocks to lead Sage, while Katie McKeon added seven points.
Sophomore Kaitlin Tyre had five rebounds and senior Vicky Gutierrez
had four points and four rebounds for Sage.
Newport falls in title tilt
* BASKETBALL: Ailed with the stomach flu, sophomore starters Ivy
Melo and Brittany Deyan sat out the Newport Harbor High girls
basketball team’s 57-27 loss to Foothill in the championship game of
the Palm Desert tournament Wednesday at Palm Desert High.
Four-year senior starter Vanessa Miller led the Sailors (9-5) with
15 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Senior Ciara
Lawrence had five points and sophomore Jessica Bodkin had six
rebounds for Newport.
Aztecs edge Mustangs
* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team lost to
Esperanza, 60-54, in the consolation semifinals of the Orange Holiday
Classic Wednesday at Chapman University. Scott Knox paced the
Mustangs with 13 points while Tony Krikorian added 11.
The Mustangs (5-7) play for 11th place today against Leuzinger at
3:30 p.m. at Chapman.
League foe bests CdM
* BASKETBALL: Junior captain Katie Schulte got into foul trouble
early in the second quarter, forcing her to sit out a large portion
of the game as the Corona del Mar High girls basketball team lost to
Pacific Coast League rival Northwood, 51-39, in the consolation
semifinals of the Costa Mesa tournament Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.
Schulte finished the game with six points for the Sea Kings
(6-8). Junior Kristina Wayte led CdM with 12 points and junior Megan
Benbow chipped in five.
Schulte tallied 19 points while Allie Duernberger added nine
points in a 52-31 CdM victory over Irvine Tuesday.
The Sea Kings play Costa Mesa today at 10:30 a.m. in the same
tournament.
Costa Mesa loses by 20
* BASKETBALL: Saugus High, of the Santa Clarita area, went on an
11-0 run to start the third quarter and defeated tournament host
Costa Mesa, 61-41, in a consolation semifinal game of the Costa Mesa
girls basketball tournament Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.
The Mustangs (4-9) shot 30.4% from the field and junior Judie
Akansel led with nine points. Senior Bethany Vergara scored six
points and Tracy Bjelland added five.
Former locals compete
* TENNIS: Newport Beach resident and current USC standout Kaes
Van’t Hof defeated Alexandre Anselme of UC Santa Barbara, 6-0, 6-3,
in the men’s singles quarterfinal round in the Costa Mesa
Intercollegiate Classic Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Van’t Hof plays Nima Roshan of Brigham Young University today at 9
a.m. in the semifinals.
