Sailors reach Chula Vista semifinals

Newport Harbor High’s boys basketball team won its second-consecutive

game in San Diego County, defeating Helix, 57-51, in the

quarterfinals of the Chula Vista tournament Tuesday at Chula Vista

High.

The Sailors (6-6) play either Chula Vista or Morse in a semifinal

at 8 tonight.

Newport evened its record for the first time this season with its

victory over Helix (8-3). Alex Orth hit six free throws in the fourth

quarter to help Newport keep its lead. Senior Taylor Young led

Newport with 11 points and junior Robert Koon added eight.

Newport moves to final

* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team

advanced to the championship game of the Palm Desert tournament after

defeating Silver Valley, 51-23, and Palm Desert, 36-32, Tuesday in

the Sailors’ second and third games of pool play, respectively, at

Palm Desert High.

Against Palm Desert (8-5), Vanessa Miller scored a game-high 18

points for the Sailors (9-4), who play today against Foothill at 1:30

p.m. in the championship game.

Markley’s layup wins it

* BASKETBALL: Junior Shaun Markley hit the game-winning layup with

six seconds remaining to give the Estancia High boys basketball team

a 59-58 victory over Granite Hills in the quarterfinals of the Coast

Classic Tuesday at Estancia High.

The Eagles (9-2) play Northwood tonight at 8 in the semifinals.

Granite Hills’ Andrew Ellis hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds

remaining to put Granite up, 58-57, setting the stage for Markley.

Senior star Carlos Pinto played about 2 1/2 quarters and scored

18 points, while still recovering from a wrist he sprained in

practice last week.

Sage holds off Aquinas

* BASKETBALL: Senior Matt Loper tallied a game-high 27 points

while grabbing 14 rebounds to pace the Sage Hill School boys

basketball team to a 43-34 victory over Aquinas in pool play of the

St. Anthony’s tournament Tuesday in Long Beach.

Sage Hill faces Pilgrim (Los Angeles) in a consolation semifinal

at 1:30 p.m. today.

Loper scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter as Sage

Hill (11-2) broke the game open. Jamie McGee added eight points while

Mike Voge contributed four points and added strong defense, Sage

Coach Steve Keith said.

Coast cruises to win

* BASKETBALL: Lauren Stepanski scored 23 points while Christen

D’Alessandro tallied 21, including three three-pointers, to lead

Orange Coast College to an 82-66 victory over Rio Hondo in the first

round of the Palomar women’s basketball tournament Tuesday.

The Pirates (8-5) face Palomar in the second round at 7 tonight.

Sea Kings falter late

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team let an

eight-point fourth quarter lead slip away and lost to Cheyenne

Central of Wyoming, 46-43, in the consolation quarterfinals of the

Campbell County tournament at Campbell County High in Gillette, Wyo.

Senior Brett Hirata led CdM (4-8) with 15 points, including three

three-pointers. Junior Ryan Lance added 12 points for the Sea Kings,

who play Rigby of Ohio today at 11 a.m.

Tournament postponed

* SOCCER: The Trabuco Hills boys soccer tournament that started

Monday and was scheduled to finish today was postponed until a later

date due to unplayable conditions caused by Tuesday’s rain.

Corona del Mar High, Newport Harbor and Costa Mesa were all

competing in the tournament.

Anteaters fall to 0-8

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost to

visiting Cal Poly, 55-48, in both teams’ first Big West Conference

matchup Monday at the Bren Events Center.

Miranda Forry led UCI (0-8, 0-1 in the Big West) with 13 points,

while Lauren Yadon and Melissa Jacob each had eight.
