Sage Hill captures crown

Sage Hill School captured the first tournament title in the history

of the girls soccer program Monday, topping Savanna, 3-2, in the

championship game of the 12-team Westminster tournament at

Westminster High.

Senior Amy Weblin scored the game’s first goal and assisted on the

game-winner, with a cross that Kara Percival headed across the

scoring area inside the opposite post late in the first half to break

a 2-2 tie.

Ali McLaughlin also scored on an assist from Claire Josephson,

while Kellee Kim added the other assists for the Lightning.

Kim, fellow freshman Julianna McLaughlin, and sophomore Emily Webb

were named to the all-tournament team after helping Sage win all four

tournament contests.

Coach Amy Ray’s Lightning (5-0) are off to the program’s best

start ever.

Sage goalie Laura Gordon made five saves and Ray credited her with

strong play throughout the tournament.

The Lightning face Westminster at home today at 3:15 p.m. in a

nonleague clash.

Simco wins debut

* BASKETBALL: The Estancia High boys basketball team beat Irvine,

64-45, Monday in the opening round of the La Quinta tournament at Los

Amigos High.

Senior Carlos Pinto lead all scorers with 31 points. He now has

997 career points with the Eagles (1-0).

“We didn’t play too great, but Pinto was just too much [for

Irvine],” Coach Jason Simco said.

The win was Simco’s first as Estancia’s varsity coach. Estancia

will play Century in the quarterfinals of the tournament Wednesday at

3:30 at La Quinta High.

CdM into quarterfinals

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team doubled

the score on Santa Ana Valley to take a 24-12 first-half lead and

held on for a 49-42 win in the first round of the La Quinta

tournament Monday at La Quinta High.

Senior guard Brett Hirata paced he Sea Kings (2-1) with 19 points,

while Ryan Lance added 11. Ted Slaughter had four points and four

blocked shots for the winners, who meet Edison in a quarterfinal

Wednesday at 8 p.m. at La Quinta.

CdM blows past Colton

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team beat

Colton, 79-43, in the first round of pool play in the Duarte High

tournament Monday.

Junior guard Katie Schulte had a team-high 16 points and three

three-pointers to give first-year Coach Scott Kahawai his first

victory with CdM (1-3).

“You always get a good feeling when you win,” he said. “I’m proud

of their performance. They were able to execute the offense

effectively.”

The Sea Kings face Sierra Vista tonight at 6 in the second round

of pool play at Duarte High.

Sailors pin Gladiators

* WRESTLING: The Newport Harbor High wrestling team beat host

Gahr, 45-35, Monday in a nonleague dual meet.

Sophomore Josh Smith sealed the victory when he pinned his

opponent in the 145-pound weight class in the first period.

Smith, Josh Hughes (119 pounds), Eddie Charcas (125), Craig

Nordstrom (140) and Jessee Marshall (160) pinned their opponents.

Heavyweight Bruce Harthshorn won, 12-9, and Zane O’Bourke (103) as

well as Michael Cefali (112) won by forfeit for Newport (1-0).

Mesa comeback foiled

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team was

edged, 51-50, by Schurr in the first round of pool play at the

Fountain Valley tournament Monday.

The Mustangs scored the first eight points of the second half to

turn what was once a 24-13 second-quarter deficit into a 27-25 lead.

But Schurr regained the lead and Costa Mesa (2-1) missed a six-footer

in the closing seconds that would have given it the lead.

Junior Judie Akansel led Mesa with a career-high 13 points, while junior Tracy Bjelland scored 12 for the Mustangs.

Barons down Eagles

* BOYS SOCCER: The Estancia High boys soccer team lost to host

Fountain Valley, 5-1, Monday in a nonleague match.

Senior Rafael Hernandez’s goal in the 78th minute averted a

shutout for Estancia (0-2-1). Senior Alex Zonplimatzi assisted on the

goal.

The Eagles had 10 shots on goal, led by senior sweeper Geo Macias’

four.

Fountain Valley (2-0) had a 3-0 lead at the half.

Crush defeat Ontario

* BASKETBALL: The visiting Orange County Crush defeated the

Ontario Warriors, 123-110, in an American Basketball Association

contest Sunday night at Colony High.

Derrick Dial, a 6-foot-4 guard with previous NBA experience,

scored 20 points to lead the Crush, who improved to 2-1 with their

second straight win over Ontario.

Juaquin Hawkins and Fred Vinson scored 17, while Damian Cantrell

added 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the winners. Jerry

Dupree had 16 points, while Kamran Sufi and Cordell Henry contributed

nine and eight assists, respectively.

The Crush make their home debut Thursday at 7 p.m. at UC Irvine’s

Bren Events Center against the Las Vegas Rattlers.

Former NBA rebounding champion Dennis Rodman is scheduled to play

for the Crush Thursday.

Saltus finishes 12th

* GOLF: Costa Mesa resident Bryan Saltus earned a $12,120 payday

by finishing tied for 12th at the Omega Hong Kong Open golf

tournament completed Sunday.

The Newport Harbor High product finished with a six-under 274 in

the four-round event, eight shots off the pace of winner Miguel

Angel.
