ON THE AGENDA

Here are some of the issues the council will consider tonight.

IDENTIFYING RECREATIONAL USES

The council will consider directing staff to do a study exploring

whether certain parcels owned by government agencies can be developed

with active recreational uses. It will also consider allocating funds

in the next fiscal year to develop conceptual plans for the sites

found capable of hosting viable recreational uses.

The Parks and Recreation Commission in October considered 10

government parcels, not owned by the city, that could be sold or

redeveloped. Commission members determined that eight of the sites

should be investigated further for possible recreational use if they

become available to buy or lease long-term. These properties include

a site owned by the Coast Community College District on Adams Avenue

and a site owned by the state at the northwest corner of Harbor

Boulevard and Fair Drive.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The council is likely to go forward with the exploration because

of the city’s shortage of properties with recreational uses. This

shortage took a hit when the Kona Lanes bowling alley was torn down.

CANCELLATION OF MEETINGS

The council will consider canceling the second council and

Planning Commission meetings in December every year because of the

business of the holiday season. The council canceled these meetings

last year.

Typically, key policy issues are not brought to the council by

staff members during the holiday season, and the Planning Commission

does not have any pending applications for its second meeting this

month.

Staff members have not yet identified a legislative mechanism that

would permanently cancel these meetings. They would have to find one

if the council wants to cancel these meetings.

WHAT TO EXPECT

If history is any indication, the council will decide to cancel

these meetings permanently.
