Smith right on

about ABC ad

I just want to compliment Steve Smith on his article Saturday,

“The penalty was off the field,” on that egregious display of

foolishness by ABC and Monday Night Football. I thought the article

was well-written, and I must say, even to the point of

understatement. I’m amazed, and I’m calling only because I’m sure he

will get some moron telling him he’s infringing on “freedom of

speech,” and he’s too right wing -- no way. So, I just thought I’d

call and balance some of that foolishness and say that it was right

on, and I’m glad somebody’s standing up for this stuff, and in fact,

in a very balanced way. Because, as he said, it’s not what the

networks show, it’s when they show it.

Boys will be boys, and there are guys who want to see stuff like

that, but not at 6 p.m. on ABC. I’m not a prude, I drink beer, and

we’re all boys, but frankly, I think even guys like Larry Flynt would

look at that and say, “Oh no.” Because then everybody rises up and

stops what he’s doing, which might be OK at 1 a.m. This kind of thing

ruins it for everybody. It also makes our wives look at us like we’re

a bunch of perverts, too, which really bugs me.

So, Smith is standing up for a lot more than I think he even

thinks he is. It’s not just protecting the kids, which I totally

support, having 16- and 13-year-old daughters.

Lawsuit appears

to lack merit

I believe [the lawsuit filed by a former principal against the

Newport-Mesa school district] does not have any merit.
