OCC sweeps state finals

The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s teams dominated the state

cross country championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Sophomore Humberto Rojas, an Estancia High product, became the

first repeat men’s individual champion in the event’s 33-year history

while leading the Pirates to the team title.

Ludi Valdez, a freshman out of Estancia, led the OCC women to

their fourth consecutive state team title. Valdez completed the

3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, nine seconds.

Rojas finished the four-mile men’s course in 20:11.

The OCC men’s team total of 50 points, well ahead of runner-up San

Bernardino Valley (101), was aided by Kellen Acosta (fifth in 20:33),

Jose Casillas (sixth in 20:36), Jason Valenzuela (ninth in 20:41) and

Matt Staggs (35th in 21:19).

The OCC women’s 36 points were 81 fewer than runner-up Riverside.

In addition to Valdez, the Pirates received strong performances from

Emilie Vo (sixth in 18:51), Jewel Butler (10th in 19:01), Gabriela Santana (15th in 19:14) and Rebecca Powell (20th in 19:27).

OCC’s Mario Ochoa was named State Coach of the Year for both the

men and the women.

Rojas and Valdez were chosen Male and Female Athlete of the Year,

respectively.
