The Newport-Mesa Jr. All-American Future Seahawks defeated the

Fountain Valley Jaguars, 24-20, in a season-finale bowl game Saturday

at Corona del Mar High.

As it was much of the season, the Seahawks’ offense was the

difference in the first half, as Anthony Battista added to his

touchdown totals behind the offensive line of Phoenix Smith, Michael

Brown, Jordan Brokaw, Colton Benter and Will Favreau.

A late second-quarter kickoff return for a touchdown by the

visiting Jaguars was the only blemish of what was a solid effort put

in by the defense of Max Durante, Jake Genova, Jack Genova, and Luke

Genova.

When the second half got under way, so did the Jaguars’ offense. A

kick return by Taylor Cortens gave the Seahawks some much-needed

field position, and the Seahawks ramped up their offense for one more

scoring strike by Battista.

The Seahawks defense showed up in the end and clamped down on the

Jags, with two key tackles for losses by Kobe Benter.

Nick Sperr sniffed out the last Jaguar play and snatched the

tackle at the Seahawks 1-yard line, securing the victory.

* Newport-Mesa Jr. Midget Seahawks 41, Woodcrest Generals 14.

Within minutes of the opening kickoff, the Seahawks advanced down

field with quarterback Adrian Luchs handing off to running back

Michael Helfrich to put the Seahawks first touchdown on the board in

the first round of playoffs Saturday.

With tackling by linebackers Dutch Lamons, Andrew Hicks and JB

Green, the Generals were unable to get their offense going. And on

the Seahawks’ next possession, wide receiver Coby Peterson caught a

50-yard pass from quarterback Mitch Sands for another touchdown,

bringing the score to 14-0 Seahawks.

Blocking by offensive linemen Kyle Cablay, Andrew Yelich, William

Ham, Vincent Galvez, Matt Morris, Sean Breslin, Michael Lancaster and

Andrew Paddon left plenty of running room for Seahawks’ speedster

Danny Miller, who carried the ball numerous times. The half came to a

close just after defensive lineman Cathan Cokas intercepted a

Generals’ pass and ran it back for a touchdown.

The Generals answered with two touchdowns of their own early in

the second half, first on a breakaway 70-yard run and again on a long

pass, but were quickly shut down by the powerful Seahawks’ defense.

Linemen Michael McKay, Grant Keligian, and Robert Connealy, along

with safeties Tyler Haly, Brandon Kula, Alex Swigert and Sean

Mangano, put an end to the Generals scoring.

The Seahawks had a successful rushing day thanks to the efforts of

Helfrich, Taylor McSunas and Green, and it was running back Danny

Miller scoring two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks advance to the second level of playoffs next weekend

facing the Compton Titans.

* Tri-City Steelers 28, Jr. Clinic Silver Seahawks 19

The Tri-City Steelers ended the Silver Seahawks’ Season in the

first round of playoffs Saturday, defeating the Jr. Clinic Silver

Seahawks 28-19.

All-conference players Chase Forrest and Tanner Traglia connected

for two touchdowns and more than 100 yards. Forrest also scored on a

50-yard quarterback sneak.

Jake Favreau, another all-conference selection, rushed for 65

yards. The passing game was a huge success for the Seahawks, due to

the blocking of all-conference center Max Carr, Austin Arico, Dane

Valdivia, Charlie Padden, Andrew Shearer, Lukas Nienhuis, Marshall

Sepulveda, Taylor Antenucchi, Keaton Cablay, Spencer Lujan, Grant

Nutt, Stephen Cureton, Quint Moses and Tate Smith.

With these blockers, Forrest and Traglia hooked up for 10

touchdown passes this season and 900 total yards passing. Favreau

added six rushing touchdowns and 823 total yards rushing.

The defense was led by fumble recoveries by Smith and Antenucchi

and drive-stopping hits by Favreau, Forrest and Lujan. Padden,

Valdivia, Moses, Shearer, Carr and Arico led the defensive line. Sage

Fleming held the Steelers field position in check with booming

kickoffs.

The Seahawks finish their very 3-6 overall, 3-2 in conference.

* Woodcrest Generals 35, Newport-Mesa Peewee Seahawks 6

The Newport-Mesa Peewee Seahawks team lost its playoff game 35-6

to the visiting Woodcrest Generals Saturday.

The Generals jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first

quarter, but the Seahawks responded on both sides of the ball, making

the last three quarters a tight contest.

The defensive line of Keegan Jakowsky, Braden Granard, Hunter

Durante, DJ Hauser, Steven Sheldon, Taylor Wheeler, Liam Duddy and

Jimmy Reed made several stops. The linebackers were Ryan Andrews,

Drew Diller, Ryan Iverson, JD Abbott, Brett Klien and Travis Woloson.

The secondary featured Blake Burkhart, Mack Weinstein, Aaron Rentz

and Chris Brown.

The Offense scored in the second half and drove the length of the

field multiple times behind a line of Grant Frazier, Luis Sheldon,

John Prickett, Austin Turner, Andrews, Reed and Hauser. Seahawks’

receivers were Spencer Haly, John Barnett, Nico Napolitano, Brett

Linkletter, Sheldon, Iverson, Diller and Abbott.
