Anteaters edge Titans
The UC Irvine men’s soccer team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 3-2,
Tuesday night in a Big West Conference match at Titan Stadium.
Ben Hofstetter put the Titans up, 1-0, 4:19 into the game. Senior
Lorne Howlett tied it in the 32nd minute on a blast from 35 yards
out. In the 35th minute, Howlett brought the ball upfield, drawing
the keeper out of the box and crossed it to junior Kit Vitagliano,
who put the Anteaters (7-11-0, 3-5-0 in the Big West) up, 2-1.
Hofstetter scored again for Fullerton. UCI sophomore Brad Evans took
the rebound off a Howlett shot to give the visitors a 3-2 lead at the
53:41 mark.
Senior goalkeeper Cameron Rossi had four saves for UCI. Cal State
Fullerton fell to 4-10-2, 2-6-0.
Sage sweeps first round
* VOLLEYBALL: Cat Dailey had 13 kills while teammate Haywood
Wright added 11 to power the host Sage Hill School girls volleyball
team to a 25-11, 25-17, 25-9 first-round victory over San Gabriel
Academy in the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A playoffs Tuesday.
Vista Murphy added eight kills while Kelly Hutchinson had a
team-high three service aces for Sage (15-6), which will play Mary
Star of the Sea in the second round Thursday at a site to be
determined today by a coin flip.
Lightning eliminated
* WATER POLO: The Sage Hill School boys water polo team, making
its first CIF Southern Section Division VI playoff appearance, lost
to fourth-seeded and host Chadwick, 14-3, in the first round Tuesday.
Sage finished the season 13-9.
Jesse Tootell scored eight goals to lead Chadwick (20-6-1), which
jumped to a 7-0 halftime lead.
Newport falls short
* SURFING: Erica Hosseini and Tanner Prairie each won their
respective heats, but the host Newport Harbor High surf team fell to
undefeated San Clemente, 96-72, in a South Coast League meet at 56th
Street Tuesday.
Hosseini earned her third straight first-place finish with a 6.5
in the girls short board, helping Newport to an 11-10 victory in the
event. Teammate Lisa Turk placed third. Prairie claimed top honors in
the boys long board competition, which San Clemente won, 11-10.
The Sailors opened with victories in the first two heats,
including an 11-10 triumph in the boys short board. Joey Head and
Christian Morabito took second and third, respectively, for Newport.
The Tritons, though, won the final five heats.
Matt Kretschmar took second for the Sailors’ body board squad,
which fell, 12-9, while Devon Falasco returned from an injury and
placed second in the girls long board event, which Newport lost,
13-8.
Daniel Shea took second in his heat while Brett Catron placed
third in the boys short board event for the Sailors.
Newport hosts Dana Hills in the final league meet Tuesday at 56th
Street before the league championships take place Nov. 17-18 at San
Onofre.
Huskies too much
* BASKETBALL: Kelly Schmidt scored a game-high 17 points, but it
was not enough as the Vanguard University women’s basketball team
lost to Pac-10 foe Washington, 84-34, in an exhibition game Monday in
Seattle.
The Lions, who come off a season when they tallied the most wins
in the program’s history while reaching the NAIA quarterfinals, shot
just 7 of 43 from the field (16.3%). Schmidt scored 13 of her points from the free-throw line.
Lacey Mills and Rachel Besse scored eight and six points, apiece,
while Besse and Schmidt each finished with a team-high seven
rebounds.
The Huskies amassed 20 assists compared to Vanguard’s six.
Vanguard will conduct its alumni game at 5:30 p.m. today before
hosting Bethany in the regular-season opener at the same time
Saturday.
