Sage Hill secures second

Sage Hill School freshman Justine Chen earned medalist honors for the

14th time in 15 matches Thursday. Chen’s 2-over-par, nine-hole round

of 38 helped the Lightning wrap up second place in the Golden West

League with a 242-291 league girls golf win over Oxford Academy at

Rancho San Joaquin in Irvine.

Emma Koh (49), Madison Gillis (50), Kimberly Venditozzi (52) and

Natakie Kraft (53) also scored for the winners (11-4, 11-3 in

league).

Along with league champion St. Margaret’s, Sage will represent the

Golden West League in the CIF Southern divisional team tournament,

Nov. 5, at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.

Ensign keys CdM win

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Lindsey Ensign had six kills to lead the

Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-7, 25-9 win

over Pacific Coast League visitor Calvary Chapel Thursday.

Shannon McMenomy had four aces and Kasey Kipp had five blocks,

while Rylee Dennis had four blocks for the Sea Kings’ (20-4, 8-0 in

league).

CdM boys, girls win

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Corona del Mar High boys and girls cross

country teams defeated visiting Tesoro in a Pacific Coast League meet

Thursday.

The boys won 23-32, while the girls won, 17-44.

CdM’s Ryan Guthrie won the boys race in 16 minutes, 33 seconds and

CdM’s Anne St. Geme topped the girls field in 18:03.

Jack Turner (second in 16:10), Tommy Hutchison (fifth in 16:25),

Tim Scott (seventh in 16:33) and Kenneth Wong (eighth in 16:41) also

scored for the Sea Kings.

Hilary May (second in 18:19), Alison Damon (third in 18:23),

Christie St. Geme (fifth in 19:09) and Nicole Slykhous (sixth in

19:13) rounded out the CdM girls’ top five.

Sailors triumph in four

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team used

offensive balance to rally for a 23-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-20 Sea View

League victory over visiting Irvine Thursday.

Kiley Hall had 16 kills, while Bryana Carey added 10. Taryn

Tarnutzer had eight and both Coco Yocoyama and Hadley Burnham chipped

in seven.

“That’s as balanced as we’ve been all year,” Sailors Coach Dan

Glenn said.

Alesha Young added a team-high 22 assists for the winners, who

improved to 9-8, 6-2 in league. The Sailors conclude league against

Laguna Hills (Tuesday) and first-place Woodbridge (Thursday). Newport

needs two wins and two Woodbridge losses to earn a share of the

crown.

Irvine fell to 2-6 in league.

The Tars open the Santa Barbara tournament of champions today

against Bullard of Fresno, at 9 a.m. at Santa Barbara High.

‘Eaters handle Aggies

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team snapped host

Utah State’s three-match home win streak while earning its seventh

victory in its last 10 contests with a 28-30, 30-28, 30-26, 30-25 Big

West Conference triumph in Logan, Utah, Thursday

Senior Kelly Wing paced the Anteaters (15-6, 8-4 in conference)

with 20 kills while Sami Cash and Amanda Vazquez added 17 and 13

kills, respectively. Keegan Featherstone tallied a team-high 25 digs

for UCI.

Sage loses showdown

* TENNIS: In a match that probably will determine the Academy

League championship, the Sage Hill School girls tennis team came up

short, losing, 10-8, to host Fairmont Thursday.

Sage (10-6, 8-2 in league) lost earlier this season to Fairmont

(13-0, 10-0) and if the team would have won Thursday, they would have

been tied for first place.

There are two league matches to play.

Sage’s No. 1 doubles team -- Sarah Flynn and Alle Hsu -- swept

their sets, but Sage Coach A.G. Longoria said the game plan was to

get one more set each from the doubles and singles.

Lightning swept aside

* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Sage Hill School suffered a 25-21, 25-14,

25-12 Academy League setback to league-leading St. Margaret’s

Thursday.

The loss all but denied the Lightning (12-6, 6-2 in league) a shot

at their first league title. Sage Hill, however, can wrap up second

place in league with wins over Whitney (Tuesday) and Brethren

Christian (Thursday).

Junior Cat Dailey led the Lightning, ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern

Section Division IV-A, with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Haywood

Wright chipped in six kills and three stuff blocks.

St. Margaret’s, No. 2 in CIF Division IV-A, is 8-0 in league.

VU’s Kramer collects

* SOCCER: Vanguard University senior Nathan Kramer captured three

different honors after leading the Lions to Golden State Athletic

Conference wins Oct. 18 and Oct. 21.

Kramer has been named GSAC Player of the Week, NAIA Region II

Player of the Week and the school’s Lion of the Week for his efforts.

He scored the game’s only goal in the 61st minute of a 1-0 victory

over Cal Baptist, Oct. 18, then netted two goals in a 5-2 win over

No. 6-ranked Fresno Pacific Oct. 21.

Vanguard, unranked all season, moved to No. 13 in the NAIA polls

after the two wins.

The 6-foot-2 forward is the second-leading scorer on a Vanguard

team that takes a 14-4 record (8-1 in conference), a school

single-season record for wins, into Saturday’s regular-season finale

against Biola.
