Jr. Pee Wee Seahawks win thriller

The Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Seahawks secured a thrilling

defeat over the South Gate Rams, 8-7, in Jr. Pee Wee football game

Saturday.

With only eight minutes left in the game and the Rams leading,

7-0, Seahawks’ quarterback Blair Luchs completed a pass to Sam

Barkley inside the 2-yard line, setting up the eventual touchdown.

Tailback John Barton would score from 1 yard out and Barkley added

the 2-point PAT try for the victory.

The Seahawks’ defense, led by Angelo Angelides, Luchs, A.J. Swies

, Aaron White, Jeff Condino, Zack Beaudin, Austin Rios, Mario

Rosales, Stephen Vayda, Trent Anderson, Tyler Barbato, Barkley and

Preston Risser, kept the Rams at-bay. Risser tallie his second

interception of the year.

The Seahawks drove the ball deep into Ram territory several times

only to have two costly turnovers. Barton, Barkley, Luchs, Risser,

Rudy Mycorn and Angelides all were able to run the ball behind a

strong offensive line of Swies, Rosales, Jake Ambrose, Anderson,

Beaudin, Chans Hall, Baron Brown, Robbie Huard, Caden Stark, Ryan

Grable, David Fenner and White.

In the third quarter, Luchs connected with tight end Zack Beaudin,

who was guarded by two Ram defenders.

Barkley returned the second-half kickoff 50 yards.

In Jr. Midget action:

* Compton Titans 28, Newport-Mesa 0:

Newport-Mesa suffered its first loss of the season.

The Seahawks’ defensive line of Cathan Cokas, Danny Miller,

Michael McKay, Robert Conneally and Grant Keligian contained the

speedy Titans. Linebackers Dutch Lamons, Andrew Hicks, J.B. Green,

along with defensive backs Adrian Luchs, Matthew Morris, Brandon

Kula, Alex Swigert, and Sean Mangano, shut down the Titans in the

second quarter.

The Seahawks came back in the second half, mounting an imposing

offense with strong play by Vincint Galvez, Kyle Cablay, Ron Sadler,

William Ham, Sean Breslin and Andrew Paddon.

Quarterback Mitch Sands connected with tight end Andrew Yelich for

a substantial gain.

Seahawk running backs Taylor McSunas, Michael Helfrich, Danny

Miller, J.B. Green, Coby Peterson and Nick Svendsen ran well.

In Futures action:

* Tri-City Steelers 19, Seahawks 16: The Steelers scored with two minutes remaining in the contest to

earn the three-point victory.

The Seahawks took a 13-12 lead into halftime with an offense led

by Phoenix Smith, Max Durante, Jake Genova, Jordan Brokaw, Luke

Genova and Colton Benter.

Kobe Benter, Nick Sperr, Taylor Cortens and Colin Brandenberger

kept the Steelers guessing, allowing Anthony Battista score on two TD

runs. The defense kept the visiting Steelers offense in-check for

most of the game.

Michael Brown, Jack Genova and Will Favreau were each in on

tackles. tackles. The Seahawks’ final drive stalled at the Steeler

30-yard line.

In Jr. Clinic action:

* Westminster 12, Seahawks 7:

Tate Smith, Max Carr, Chase Forrest, Spencer Lujan and Dane

Valdivia led the Seahawks’ defense.

Smith had two tackles for losses while Carr had a fumble recovery

after Forrest forced the loose ball. Lujan also had a tackle for a

loss, forced a fumble and added a fumble recovery while Valdivia

recovered an onside kick.

Jake Favreau finished with 80 rushing yards and one TD while

quarterback Forrest was 4 of 6 for 40 yards with a PAT.

Quentin Moses, Stephen Cureton, Charlie Padden, Valdivia, Andrew

Shearer, Lukas Nienhuis, Carr and Smith opened holes for Seahawk

running backs.

Tanner Traglia tallied three catches and Keaton Cablay added one

reception. Sage Fleming added strong runs while fullback Grant Nutt

provided a boost. Taylor Antenucci and Marshall Sepulveda played

strong defense.

In Pee Wee Division action

* Inglewood 49, Newport-Mesa 0:

The Seahawks’ offense of Nico Napolitano, John Prickett, Jimmy

Reed, Austin Turner, D.J. Hauser, Grant Frazier, Stephen Sheldon,

Luis Sheldon, Drew Diller, Travis Woloson, Blake Burkhardt, Ryan

Iverson, J.D. Abbott, John Barnett and Ryan Andrews held their own

against Inglewood.

The Seahawks moved the ball on the ground with running from

Abbott, Burkhart and Iverson while quarterback Woloson completed

passes to receivers Diller, Iverson, Burkhart and Stephen Sheldon.

Braden Granard, Spencer Haly, Chris Brown, Mack Weinstein, Aaron

Rentz, Brett Linkletter, Taylor Wheeler, Keegan Jakosky, Liam Duddy,

Hunter Durante and Brett Klien led the Seahawks’ defense.

In Jr. Clinic play:

* Norwalk Saints 33, Seahawks 6:

Quest Truxton scored the Seahawks’ TD with a 60-yard kickoff

return late in the third quarter.

The Seahawks started the game with a 15-yard run on the first play

from scrimmage behind the offensive line of Beau Roth, James Barrett,

Will Eary, Noah Howe and Nic Landstrom.

But the drive stalled on the Saint 35-yard line and Norwalk scored

a touchdown on the following possession.

The Seahawks’ defense of Alex Fuller, Howe, Austin Robert and Cole

Collins forced a fumble recovered by Trevor Branca and Truxton added

an interception.

Jamal Bazzi and Jeremiah Barwick protected Seahawks’ quarterback

Clint Henderson in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks moved the ball

efficiently with runs by Howe (9), Woodward (10) and Roth (8).

Sheldon earned game Most Valuable Player honors with five tackles

on defense and strong play on the offensive line.
