Kyle Thorsness scored eight goals in visiting Costa Mesa High’s 13-3
Golden West League boys water polo victory against Santa Ana Tuesday
night.
Costa Mesa dominated the first and fourth quarters, scoring a
combined nine goals to Santa Ana’s two. The Mustangs (6-2, 2-0 in
league) also received two goals from Luke Yellin with one goal apiece
from Adam Douglas, Evan Spencer and Anthony Adamowicz.

Mesa edges Panthers
* TENNIS: Evelyn Wallace and Jasmine Mathieson each won two of
three singles sets for the Costa Mesa High girls tennis team, which
defeated Golden West League foe Orange on games, 80-71, after the
teams had each won nine sets Tuesday.
Leah Le and Hong-An Nguyen took two of three doubles sets for Mesa
(4-5, 4-1 in league) while Linh Hoang claimed one singles set.
Singles spark Eagles
* TENNIS: Sara Stratton, Heather Morton and Yvonne Zaidler helped
the visiting Estancia High girls tennis team win all nine singles
sets en route to a 13-5 Golden West League victory over Santa Ana
Tuesday.
Stratton and Morton lost just three games while Zaidler went 6-2,
6-0, 6-2, for the Eagles (6-3, 5-0 in league), who are 17-0 in league
matches dating to last season.
Estancia’s doubles team of Sage O’Toole and Cathy Pittman won two
sets.
Sage stays undefeated
* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School girls tennis team has continued
where it left off. The reigning Academy League champions made quick
work of Brethren Christian Tuesday, 17-1.
No. 1 singles player Sarah Geocaris and No. 1 doubles tandem of
Sarah Flynn and Alle Shu both only lost one game combined.
Tars nipped by Foothill
* GOLF: Junior Natalie Draganza led all scores with a 5-over-par
41 for Newport Harbor, but it was not enough as Foothill edged the
Sailors, 240-242, in a Sea View League opener.
Kayleigh Horn (42), Kendall Horn (52), Iko Kagasoff (53) and
Ashley Jacobs (54) scored for Newport Harbor (2-2 overall)
CdM sets record in loss
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar girls golf team suffered a 203-207 loss
to Pacific Coast League opponent University at Strawberry Farms
Tuesday. The Sea Kings (4-1, 0-1 in league) set a school record in
the loss, beating their previous low by five strokes.
University (5-0, 1-0) was led by Megan Chang’s 2-over-par 38. CdM
posted scores from Caitlin McDonald (39), Katie McKittrick (40),
Jonna Kim (40), Katie Albright (42) and Michelle Albrecht (46).
Sage rebounds for win
* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill’s girls volleyball team avenged a
tournament loss to Irvine by defeating the Vaqueros, 25-23, 28-26,
19-25, 26-24, Tuesday.
The Lightning (5-4) were led by junior outside hitters Vista
Murphy and Cat Dailey. Murphy finished with 16 kills and 11 digs and
Dailey registered team-highs in kills (17) and blocks (five). Kelsey
Lawler had 47 assists.
Sea Kings downed
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High goalie Gaston Sanford had five
steals and two saves, but the visiting Sea Kings lost to
Harvard-Westlake, 12-6, in a nonleague boys water polo game Tuesday.
Jacob Murphy and Blake Schoenberg each had two goals for CdM (4-5).
OCC extends streak
* SOCCER: Sophomore forward Miguel Ochoa scored a pair of goals
and assisted on a third to lead the host Orange Coast College men’s
soccer team to a 3-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over Santiago
Canyon Tuesday.
After going winless in its first three games, Orange Coast (4-2-1,
2-0-0 in the OEC) has now reeled off four straight wins, including
its first two in conference.
Coast women shut out
* SOCCER: In a key Orange Empire Conference game, the Santiago
Canyon College women’s soccer team scored once in each half en route
to a 2-0 home victory over Orange Coast Tuesday.
Anteaters Wing it in 5
* VOLLEYBALL: Kelly Wing recorded 31 kills and 10 digs as the host
UC Irvine women’s volleyball team rallied to defeat UC Riverside,
21-30, 27-30, 30-26, 30-28, 15-6, Tuesday in Big West Conference
action.
Lancers strike Lions
* VOLLEYBALL: Cal Baptist’s women’s volleyball team got a
match-high 21 kills from Yudelka Bonilla to down host Vanguard,
30-23, 21-30, 30-23, 30-22, in a Golden State Athletic Conference
contest Tuesday.
Jaclyn Lee led the Lions (17-6, 4-3) with 12 kills followed by 11
each from Keri DeHaas and Jennifer Geisbauer. Sevryn Demos led
Vanguard with 32 digs.
VU wins GSAC opener
* SOCCER: Matt Hess tallied his 12th and 13th goals of the season
while teammate David McAulay scored twice to help Vanguard’s men’s
soccer team defeat visiting Christian Heritage, 7-0, to open Golden
State Athletic Conference play Tuesday night.
Darin DeVore, Nathan Kramer and Andrew May each added single goals
while May added an assist for the Lions (7-3), who have won four
straight.
