Laguna drops tough match

The girls’ tennis teams at Troy and Laguna Beach showed Tuesday why

they are considered two of the top teams in Orange County.

The Warriors and Breakers fought to a 9-9 tie, but Troy won the

match on overall points, 79-70, in a nonleague match at Laguna.

Claire Rietsch gave Laguna a sweep at No. 1 singles with 7-5, 6-0,

6-1 wins, and Katie Ochwat and Kellie Ammerman swept at No. 1

doubles, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

In a previous match, Laguna was an 11-7 winner over visiting

Woodbridge.

Rietsch again swept at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

In girls’ volleyball, Laguna held a 2-1 edge in games over host

Huntington Beach but ended up on the short end of a 21-25, 25-17,

25-13, 21-25, 12-15 loss in a tight nonleague match on the Oilers’

home court.

The Breakers also lost a tough match to Murrieta Valley, 15-25,

25-19, 15-25, at the Dave Mohs Tournament at Edison High.

Laguna has had the week off and returns to action Saturday at the

Loara Tournament.

In girls’ golf Tuesday, Laguna fell to 1-2 overall following a

247-299 nonleague loss to host Trabuco Hills at Dove Canyon Country

Club.

In an earlier match, Laguna suffered its initial loss of the year

when the Breakers were edged by host Savanna, 255-256, at Dad Miller

Golf Course.

Hanna Thames of Laguna shared medalist honors with the Rebels’

Melissa Vigoren at 43.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna is competing in the prestigious South

Coast Tournament, which got underway Thursday.

The 32-team tournament, featuring nine of the county’s top teams,

is being played at four school pool sites: Tustin, Capistrano Valley,

Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor.

Laguna battled University in a first-round match Thursday at

Tustin.

The Breakers were seeded fourth in their pool, coach Rick McKee

said.

The championship final will be played Saturday at 4:05 p.m. at

Newport Harbor High.
