Bill to ease fees moves to governor
A bill that passed the state legislature Friday specifies that
student fees at public universities and colleges should not increase
more than 8% a year.
The bill also requires fees not to exceed 40% of the overall cost
of education at University of California schools and 30% of costs at
California State universities.
“[This bill] will ensure that future classes aren’t strapped with
the burden of balancing the budget in bad fiscal times,” said
Assembly member Carol Liu (D-La Canada Flintridge), an author of the
bill, in a press release. “This measure keeps college accessible by
requiring fee increases to be gradual, moderate and predictable. It
makes state funding of public higher education a priority in this
state again.”
The bill now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s desk for
approval.
