Chicken-wing contest takes flight today

Chicken-wing fans can watch amateur chefs compete for the

selection of a new flavor of wings for Wingnuts restaurant in Costa

Mesa today. Wingnuts asked for the public’s help in choosing its 31st

flavor and received a host of entries.

A panel of food journalists and other VIPs will conduct a taste

test to pick a winner. The recipe will be featured on the menu in

September, with proceeds from its sale donated to the Westside Boys &

Girls Club.

The taste-off takes place from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Wingnuts,

Native Americans to meet at fairgrounds

The Southern California Indian Center’s 36th annual powwow is

taking place this weekend at the Orange County Fairgrounds. The event

features the largest powwow and arts and crafts show in California,

along with intertribal dancing, Native American singing, drumming and

cuisine.

The powwow starts at 9 a.m. today and Sunday. For more

Office furniture sale to benefit parenting group

Parent Help USA of Newport Beach will hold an office furniture

sale today from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its child abuse prevention

center, 3848 Campus Drive, suites 101 and 106, Newport Beach. Used

desks, file cabinets, chairs and other items donated by Flag Star

Bank will be sold, with proceeds going to prevent child abuse and

educate parents in the community. Parent Help USA is a nonprofit

group that offers counseling, nonviolent parenting classes, clothing

and other family assistance.
