The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor is delighted to present an

evening of dinner and the movies for your enjoyment on Sept. 23.

Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a food festival by a

dozen Newport area restaurants, according to past President Dick

Freeman. At 7:30 p.m., Revolution Studios-Sony will present a

pre-release showing of “The Forgotten,” starring Julianne Moore,

Alfre Woodard, Dominic West and Gary Sinise.

Proceeds from this charity event support the Orange County Child

Abuse Prevention Center and other youth-centered community programs,

including college scholarships for deserving high school achievers,

Freeman said.

You, your friends and business associates are cordially invited to

attend this fun-filled casual evening of food, wine and

entertainment. Tickets are $50 per ticket and checks may be made

payable to “The Exchange Club Charitable Foundation.” VIP seating is

GOLF FOR KIWANIS AND COSTA MESA

The Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club’s annual golf tournament will be held

on Sept. 13 at the Costa Mesa Country Club with tee times beginning

at 10 a.m., according to Golf Committee chair Charles Markel.

All the profits will go to Costa Mesa United, a group that is

raising funds to build and endow a swimming pool at Costa Mesa High

School and a stadium at Estancia High School.

There are openings for 80 golfers who, besides enjoying a day of

golf, will receive tee and raffle prizes and enjoy dinner at the

Newport Rib Company. Unlike most golf tournaments, this one appears

to be affordable at $100 a player, which includes golf and dinner.

PEACE SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED

Rotary International is offering 70 scholarships, worth up to

$50,000, to mid-career professionals who are interested in obtaining

a master’s degree in peace and conflict resolution at one of seven

prestigious universities in six countries around the world, according

to Greg Arbues, president of the Rotary Club of Newport-Irvine.

Potential candidates for this scholarship include individuals who

work for nongovernment organizations involved in human rights,

disaster relief, aid distribution, environmental advocacy, refugee

issues and other issues related to peace and international

cooperation.

Other potential candidates include men and women working for

government agencies, such as departments of state, foreign

ministries, diplomatic corps or other groups of civil servants, as

well as international volunteer agencies and mediation, arbitration

and dispute resolution groups. According to Arbues, successful

candidates in the first class of scholars included journalists,

ecologists, a peace consultant and a graduate student studying

nuclear waste management and proliferation issues, among others.
