Locals vie in U.S. Am qualifier
Five local golf amateurs competed Thursday in U.S. Amateur sectional
qualifying rounds but did not advance to the U.S. Amateur
championship Aug. 16-22 at Winged Foot Golf Course in Mamaroneck,
N.Y.
In qualifying rounds hosted by the Southern California Golf
Association at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier (6,412 yards,
par 70), 82 golfers played for three spots in the U.S. Amateur.
Newport Beach’s Don Dubois shot 76-80--156 and did not advance.
Newport Beach’s Brian Wegener shot 83-76--159. The qualifiers were
Jordan Nasser of Anaheim Hills (139), Spencer Anderson of Pacific
Palisades (140) and Tommy Mansuwan of Irvine (143).
At Western Hills Golf & Country Club in Chino Hills (6,746 yards,
par 72), 79 golfers played for three spots, including nonqualifiers
Jeremy May of Costa Mesa (73-73--146), Amit Chopra of Newport Coast
(79-69--148) and Greg Meyer of Newport Beach (78-73--151). Qualifiers included Chris Heintz of Brea, (137), Ryota Ito of Rancho Santa
Margarita (137) and Ryan Panichpakdee of Long Beach (141).
