NHYC sails to three victories
The Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Drew Mason, Brooke Thomson, Chris
Barnard and Michael Ramming won in their respective classes in the
Southern California Sailing Junior Olympic Festival at The Newport
Harbor Yacht Club in Balboa Sunday.
Mason, who will be a freshman at Corona del Mar High in the fall,
along with Thomson, who will be a sophomore at Newport Harbor, won
the title in the Club Flying Junior class, a standard race as opposed
to the 420 class that consists of boats of higher performance.
Barnard, who will be an eighth-grader at Ensign Intermediate, won
the Radial class title, while Ramming, a Newport Beach resident, won
the Byte class.
Approximately 125 junior sailors, ranging from age 8 to 18
competed in the four-day event, which also included locals from the
Lido Isle Yacht Club and the Balboa Yacht Club.
Bryan Rigby and Briana Provancha of the Southwestern Yacht Club
from San Diego won the 420 class title.
Ryan Karnes of the San Diego Yacht Club won the Laser class title.
The Laser consists of 14-foot boats and is more competitive than the
Byte class, which involves 12-foot boats.
