Third place: Jim Keane (80-78 -- 158)
*Dahl sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, No. 1,
for the victory.
Keane won the super seniors title (65 and older) with his 158.
* Newport Beach resident Don Dubois reached the second round of
match play in the 93rd California Golf Association amateur
championship before falling to San Clemente resident Mark Warman, 6
and 5, at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif., June 24.
Dubois, seeded sixth, was one of 32 golfers from a field of 60 who
advanced to the match-play portion of the championship after three
days of stroke play.
In the first round Thursday, Dubois defeated John McClure, 3 and
2. Dubois was 1 up after the par-3 12th, but parred the next two
holes to increase the lead to 3 up. Pars on Nos. 15 and 16 sent
Dubois into the afternoon round.
Warman, seeded 22nd, has played Pebble Beach a dozen times and
reached the quarterfinals of this event two years ago.
Corona del Mar resident Brian Lindley carded a 2-over-par 73 on
the Poppy Hills Golf Course for a three-round total of 223, but
failed to make the 32-player field after Wednesday’s final round of
stroke play.
Nine players finished at 223, one stroke more than the cut line.
Six players finished at 222, with five advancing to match play.
The quarterfinals and semifinals were held Friday, while the final
took place Saturday.
* Costa Mesa resident Farrell Hinkle (77-77--154) finished at 10-over-par and missed the cut by two strokes in the CGA’s Senior
Amateur Championship held at Poppy Hills June 23-25. Hinkle was one
of five golfers to finish at 154 while six tallied 153s.
* Newport Beach Golf Course head professional John Leonard will
conduct three levels of junior camps this summer beginning in July.
The Level I camp is designed for the beginning golfer that has
little or no previous golf experience [ages 5 1/2 and older]. Three
camp sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 13-15, July 27-29
and Aug. 10-12. Players will focus on fundamentals such as proper
stance, how to grip the club, set up and aiming shots. Instruction on
the full swing, chipping, pitching, putting and rules and etiquette
will also be stressed. Cost is $165 per player.
The Level II camp is catered to the intermediate golfer with some
experience [ages 7 and older]. Three sessions will be held from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20-22, Aug. 3-5 and Aug. 17-19. The morning
portion focuses on form, technique and individual shots. Lunch will
be provided. Instructors will accompany golfers onto the course in
the afternoon for a nine-hole scramble. Cost is $245 per player.
The Level III camp is for the more advanced player who either
attended the Level II session or has an established handicap. The
camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 24-26. Instructors will provide
individual attention and give players practice drills in the
mornings. A nine-hole playing lesson will follow lunch on the first
two days. Instructors will teach course management. On the final day,
players will compete in a tournament. Prizes will be awarded for
first, second and third place. Cost is $265 per player.
Class sizes are limited for all three camp levels and
pre-registration is required.
