Cubs take playoff from Yankees, 10-3
In a playoff game to determine the second-place team in Ocean View
Little League Majors Division standings, the Cubs downed the Yankees,
10-3, at Murdy Park.
The victory also secured the division’s second and final spot in
the District 62 Tournament of Champions, which begins today at
Seaview Little League.
The Cubs started fast by scoring five runs in the top of the first
inning.
Jason Fernandez was hit by the first pitch of the game and then
Sean Guite hit the second pitch of the game to right-center for a
double to put runners at second and third.
Fernandez scored on a wild pitch and Guite scored on a ground ball
by Jordan Miller for a 2-0 lead. A walk to Calvin Primich, a single
by Cody Wilkinson, an RBI single by Jacob Conroy and an RBI from
Montana Merhoff made the score 5-0.
The Yankees got one run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI
single by Chris Berry, but the Cubs then added two more runs in the
second inning.
With two out, Fernandez singled and Guite hit the top of the left
field wall for an RBI double, then Miller had an RBI single to make
it 7-1.
The Cubs added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings
with Primich and Guite driving in runs with singles.
Guite and Miller pitched three innings each for the Cubs.
For the Cubs, Fernandez had two singles; Guite doubled twice,
singled, walked and drove in two runs; Miller singled with two RBIs;
Primich had a walk, a single and an RBI; Conroy singled twice and had
an RBI; and Merhoff drove in a run.
For the Yankees, Chris Berry had three singles, Cody Springer
doubled and Tommy Diecidue had two singles.

Sean Guite belted two home runs to power the Cubs past the Angels.
Guite’s first homer came in the top of the first inning. Following
a walk to Jason Fernandez, Guite hit a towering drive over the right
center field fence for a 2-0 Cubs lead.
The Cubs added two more runs in the first on a walk to Jordan
Miller, a single by Cody Wilkinson and a ground out by Jacob Conroy.
In the third, the Cubs scored three more runs with Calvin Primich,
Wilkinson, and Conroy scoring, the last run coming in on a ground out
by Chad Hackworth.
Primich and Wilkinson scored again in the fifth and Hackworth
drove in another run. In the sixth, Guite blasted his second home run
of the game over the left-field fence to complete the scoring.
Guite and Miller each pitched three innings for the Cubs.
Guite finished with two home runs, a single and a walk.
Primich singled and walked, Wilkinson singled and reached base
three times, Nathan Sapia walked twice and Hackworth drove in two
runs.
