Quarterfinal Saturday in the boys fifth- and sixth-grade gold

division of the Daily Pilot Cup turned into Shootout Saturday for

Kaiser and Carden Hall at Costa Mesa High.

Carden Hall tied the game, 1-1, in the final minute to force a

shootout, but Kaiser responded with a 3-1 edge in the extra session

to advance to today’s semifinals against Mariners at 10:30 a.m. at

the Farm Sports Complex’s No. 2 field.

Carden Hall’s Alex Maddox took a pass from Ben Capaldi and tied

the game, 1-1, in the final minute to force the extra session.

Matt Mello, Jay Ordaz and Danny Ingalls each scored in the

shootout while Forrest Djauherieh found the back of the net for

Carden Hall, which missed its first three attempts.

Kaiser goalkeeper Wes Baker stopped three balls in the shootout to

finish with 12 saves.

“When [Baker] is in goal, you don’t feel too bad,” teammate Dane

Sequiera.

Mario Figueroa scored Kaiser’s first goal on a Mello assist in the

game’s opening minutes.

In other boys 5-6 gold quarterfinals:

* Killybrooke 7, Our Lady Queen of Angels 1:

Kenneth Alvarez scored three goals while Javier Vargas added two

for Killybrooke, which improved to 3-0 in the Pilot Cup and earned a

semifinal matchup with Rea, the three-time defending champions, at

10:30 a.m. today on Farm No. 1.

Wes Baker scored on a 30-yard free kick that floated into the net

to cut the Killybrooke lead to 5-1 in the 34th minute. Baker nearly

scored in similar fashion less than a minute later, but Irvin

Dorantes made one of his two saves -- he also stopped a penalty kick

-- to stall any potential momentum for Our Lady.

Dorantes, along with Cesar Amador, each added goals for

Killybrooke while sweeper Michael Alvarez, the identical twin brother

of Kenneth, tallied two assists.

“We have been excited since the beginning of the year, once we

found out we were in the tournament,” Killybrooke Coach Silvio

Alderete said.

Alderete tried to get the team in last year’s tournament, but the

field was already full.

Neil Baker added strong defense while Jack Gerdau sparked several

attacks for Our Lady.

* Rea 7, Harbor Day 0:

Martin Garcia scored three goals while Juan Gonzalez added two for

Rea, which has outscored its opponents, 20-0, in three Pilot Cup

games.

Rigo Perez and Aldo Castillo each added one for the Sharks.

Gonzalez has scored nine goals in three games in front of a

defense anchored by sweeper Rodrigo Rubalcava.

“The defense is the most impressive thing about this team,” Rea

co-coach Gannon Burks said. “Harbor Day is well-skilled.”

* Mariners 4, Harbor View 0:

Mychael Clark had a hat trick while Shawn Shehidi scored one goal

for Mariners, which jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes.

Harbor View came out strong in the second half, firing five shots

compared to just two in the first 30 minutes and had several scoring

attempts.

Paul Zubatov and Ryan Kontra each hit the crossbar with shots and

Chris Burke’s header that landed in the net was waved off after an

offsides violation.

Clark scored the first two Mariners’ goals, one on an assist from

Clay Friend, giving Coach Mark Arblaster and his team some breathing

room early.

“That took a lot of pressure off us with no [substitutes],”

Arblaster said. “It was a relief.”

Harbor View maintained pressure up front with forwards Misha

Pakvasa while sweeper Pierce Stemler keyed a defense in front of

goalkeeper Sandon Griffin, who stopped a point-blank attempt and dove

to corral a loose ball near the post.

Rory Kew made three saves in goal for Mariners before Arblaster

inserted him at forward late in the second half.

Sean Davis and Brian Baca started several attacks for Mariners.
