Krikorian, Duarte named Golden West League MVPs

Costa Mesa High senior Stacy Krikorian and junior Nilani Duarte, who

led the Mustangs to their second straight unbeaten Golden West League

title season, highlight the girls soccer coaches’ all-league

selections.

Duarte is the Offensive MVP, while Krikorian is the Defensive MVP.

Joining Duarte and Krikorian on the first team are Mesa seniors

Julie Nomura, Kara Jenkins and Sara Bryant, junior Rachel Ronquillo

and sophomore Jasmin Day.

Duarte, Krikorian and Day were first-team selections in 2003, when

Ronquillo and Jenkins received second-team honors. .

Mesa junior goalie Kindra Bailey is a second-team pick this

season, as are Mustang freshmen Caitlyn Duffy and Cindy Martinez.

Estancia did not have a player recognized.

CdM girls victorious

* SWIMMING: Corona del Mar High won 4 of 7 events, including the

first three, to win the Millikan CIF Southern Section girls swimming

relays Saturday at Belmont Plaza.

CdM, which competes in CIF Division II, amassed 248 points, well

ahead of Division I power and defending event champion Villa Park

(178).

Coach Doug Volding’s squad got things off on a high note by

winning the 400-yard medley relay, the 300 freestyle and the 200

breaststroke.

Sophomore Lexie Shue, senior Kim McKay, freshman Katie Indvik and

freshman Stephanie Gabert combined for a time of 4 minutes, 8.84

seconds in the 400 medley.

Junior Jordan Anae, freshman Tumua Anae, senior Katya Eadington,

junior Ann Winners, senior Vivian Liao and sophomore Ashley Chandler

each swam a 50-yard leg on the winning 300 free (2:33.85).

The 200 breaststroke victory (2:07.15) included Shue, sophomore

Alexine Rodenhuis, Tumua Anae and Gabert, while the 200 backstroke

quartet of Jordan Anae, Chandler, freshman Sarah Hutchison and McKay

won in 2:07.15.

CdM was second in the 400 free in 3:37.90. The Anae sisters were

joined in that performance by Hutchison and McKay.

Volding said one key was avoiding disqualifications that have

proved costly in the past.

“I got our team together before the meet and told them there was

one team that could beat them, did they know who that was?” Volding

recalled. “They started to say ‘Villa Park’ and ‘Irvine’. But I

answered CdM, to emphasis how important avoiding a DQ was.”

Locals gymnasts sparkle

* GYMNASTICS: Costa Mesa’s Kevin Wolting and Donothan Bailey, and

Adam Young of Newport Beach recently completed solid performances in

the Southern California Junior Olympic gymnastic championships at

Pacifica High.

Wolting, a 9-year-old who attends Kaiser Elementary, finished

first in his age group for the class five division. The best division

is class one. Wolting also qualified for the Southern California

All-Stars at the meet that was held March 13. He will be representing

Southern California and New Hope Academy of Gymnastics at the

regional championships, Thursday through Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz.

Wolting competed against roughly 100 young athletes, taking first

in the vault, parallel bars, rings and high bars. He also won the

all-around, scoring 56.725.

Bailey, who also trains at New Hope, came in seventh in the class

three division and is an alternate for the Southern California

All-Star team.

Young, a 9-year-old who attends Eastbluff Elementary, finished

10th in the rings competition in class six division to help his team

finish eighth in Southern California.

Sea Kings top Eagles

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team handled host

Calvary Chapel Monday, 201-237, in a Pacific Coast League match at

Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club in Irvine.

Rob Ury, Eric Miller and Jamie Bloom all shot 3-over-par 39 for

the Sea Kings (2-8, 2-1 in league), while Alex Chikovani (40) and Ben

Tilsen (44) also scored for the winners.

Sailors defeated by Knights

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team lost, 192-205, to

Sea View League host Foothll at Tustin Ranch Country Club Monday.

Brandon Sowers (39), Michael Benvenuti (41), Michael Vackar (41),

Davis Pemstein (42) and David Motschenbacher scored for the Sailors

(5-5, 1-2 in league).

Johnston paces Eagles

* TRACK AND FIELD: Estancia High senior Jason Johnston won the

long jump and was second in the 110-meter high hurdles to highlight

Eagle participants in the San Pedro Relays Saturday at San Pedro

High.

Johnston leaped 20 feet, 8 inches in the long jump and ran the

hurdles in 15.5 seconds.

Senior Nic Koreerat also stood out. He finished second in his 100

heat and teamed with David Moreno, Adam Rodriguez and Diego Carrasco

to pace a third-place finish in the 400 relay in 59.8.

Freshman Jeannette Abrego was third in her 1,600 heat (5:49),

while senior Matt Zich was third in his 1,600 heat (4:58), two spots

ahead of teammate Alan Reza (5:00),

Senior Erica Pleitez was fourth in her 100 heat (13.8) and

Carrasco was fourth in his boys 100 heat in 12.4.

The boys sprint medley relay (legs of 400, 200, 200 and 800) of

freshman Enrique Vivar, Ibrahim Muradian, Rodriguez and sophomore

C.J. Buchmann was fifth in 3:58.1.

The girls 4 x 200 relay, including junior Ashley Rodriguez, Jessie

Rincon, senior Crystal Rincon and sophomore Gabby Cox, was fifth in

2:09.4.

The boys 4 x 200 was also fifth. That unit included Muradian, Adam

Rodriguez and Moreno.

The boys 1,600 relay quartet of Johnston, Buchmann, Adam Rodriguez

and Koreerat ran a season-best 3:41.8 to place fifth

Freshman Jaye Hellmich was fifth in the girls high jump (4-6) and

also posted a personal best in the triple jump (29-8), though no

place was available.

Ashton Anderson was fifth in her flight in the girls shot put

(24-1 1/2). There were two flights.

Earning sixth-place finishes were Crystal Rincon (13.9 in the 100

hurdles) and the girls 1,600 relay of Pleitez, Jessie Rincon, Cox and

Carrasco, which ran 5:03.

The girls 400 relay of Pleitez, Jessie Rincon, Kathy Pittman and

Cox was seventh in 59.8.

Anteaters handle Bengals

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team defeated visiting

Idaho State, 5-1, Monday to advance to today’s championship match at

the Irvine spring invitational at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The Anteaters (10-7) will meet Brown at 1:30 p.m. to decide the

title.

Monday, Tiffany Chang, Kristina Boss, Christie Posner, Veronica

Fermin and Kelly Savin all won singles matches against ISU. No

doubles matches were contested.

UCI defeated Idaho, 5-2, Sunday in the tourney, as Chang, Hui

Leow, Kristina Boss and Fermin won in singles.

Stevens paces Vanguard

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University sophomore Laine Stevens won

the women’s 100 meters, as well as the 200 to lead strong

performances by the Lions at the Cal State Bakersfield five-way meet

completed Friday.

Stevens posted season-best times of 12.91 and 26.98 in her two

victories.

Vanguard sophomore Matt Smith won the men’s 1,500 (3:59.98), while

Billy Smith won the 3,000 in 9:07.09 and was second in the 1,500 in

4:01.09.

Vanguard’s Levin Seekins (5-10 1/4 in the men’s high jump) and

Zach Powell (2:02.36 in the 200) finished second.

The VU women’s 400 relay quartet ran a school-record 50.51 to

finish second, while the women’s 1,600 relay team also finish second

in 4:10.63, an outdoor season best.
