Giants rally to down Angels

The Costa Mesa National Little League Minor A Giants rallied for six

runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the Costa Mesa

American Angels, 8-4, in action March 20.Jake Spielberger led off the

bottom of the fifth with a line-drive single to left and the rest of

the Giants followed his lead.

Tre Le Ele and George DeLaTorre doubled while Johnathon Ponce,

Kannon Stone, Robert Webb and Jacob Knapp all singled. Matt Carlyle

walked.

Alex Kronfeldt came in to pitch with the bases loaded for the

Giants in the first and got them out of the jam by retiring the first

batter she faced. She also pitched the next three innings, giving up

only one run and finishing with nine strikeouts.

In Minor B play:

* Padres 18, Dodgers 14:

Alex DeSoto had two hits and scored three runs and Tyler Rios had

one hit and scored four runs to help the Padres hold off the Dodgers.

The Padres used eight hits, including doubles by Johnathan Ball,

Levi Stillman and Erik Rasmussen -- and nine walks -- to take a 18-8

lead entering the bottom of the sixth. The Dodgers scored six, but

Stillman came on in relief to earn the save.

The Dodgers’ Nathan Pearson smashed a two-run home run over the

left-field fence in the second inning. Pearson went 3 for 4 with

four RBIs. Eric Pfautz had two hits and scored a run and Shane Sutton

had one hit and two RBIs.

Eddie Chervony made two outstanding defensive plays for the

Dodgers. He ranged to his left at second base to field a grounder and

throw out the runner to end the second inning and then caught a fly

in left field and threw to third to complete a double play in the

third inning.

Dodger second baseman Chris Vasquez ended the fourth by robbing

Stillman of a hit on a looping line drive and stepping on the base

for the unassisted double play.

In Costa Mesa American Little League Minor B action:

* Angels 7, Yankees 5:

Frankie Farldow and Erick Kjos pitched for the Yankees, who drew

strong support and encouragement from all their teammates. The

Yankees defeated the Mariners, 9-5, March 6.

* Giants 13, Dodgers 5:

The Giants relied on teamwork and clutch plays to stage a

come-from-behind victory over the Dodgers.

Both Frank Dipietro and Aaron Wood were strong on the mound.

Chase Whittaker, Sam Miller and Tyler Tashiro all stole bases

while Michael Birnbaum, Matt Jarmacz and Kyle Barnett added hits to

key a nine-run fifth for the Giants.

Catcher Jess Paz protected the plate and stole home on a wild

pitch. Ray Barkis played well at second and Al Mazur scored twice.

Dodgers pitchers Eric Pfautz and Kaimon Brust held the Giants to

four runs over four innings before the Giants rallied.

* Yankees 16, Cubs 10:

The Cubs led, 9-0, in the third before the Yankees rallied.

Farldow hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to get

the Yankees (2-1) back in the game. Michael Hernandez followed with a

triple.

Pitcher Kjos hit one to the fence to even the score in the fourth.

Matt Fewel played two strong innings at catcher and also had a

great offensive game, hustling home on a wild pitch and beating the

throw with a slide.

Jake Stone led the Cubs by pitching three innings with three

strikeouts. Stone also had an unassisted double play, catching a pop

fly and tagging the runner at first.

Stone hit an inside-the-park home run in the second.

Chris Hernandez also helped the defense with a great play in the

first, diving for a grounder and tagging the runner out at first.

Joe Hansen drove in two runs with a triple. Grant Spady went 2 for

3 with a double and two RBIs. Hayden Swift drove in a run with a

double and Adam Ward and Lucas DeLaTorre each went 2 for 4 with an

RBI.

Art Wisniewski went 1 for 3 and scored a run.

* The Costa Mesa National Braves battled to a 12-12 tie with the

Costa Mesa American Red Sox.

Joshua Tierney, Branden Arceyut, Matt Thomas, Brandon Dieckhoff,

Brad Wilson and Ryan West all singled while Dieckhoff and Wilson also

tripled. Sean Golden and Lisa Hyndman had great at-bats and provided

alert baserunning.

The Braves had strong pitching performances by Gabriel Ruan,

Cassie Stevenson, Matt Thomas and West. Thomas, Dieckhoff and Charles

Nelson made great catches in the infield.

In T-Ball Minor play:

* The Marlins took on the Rockies.

Drake Siegel hit his first home run and was awarded the offensive

player of the game.

Zachery Arceyut caught a line-drive in the first inning and Sean

McHugh was awarded best listener

Devin Pacheco was named the best hustler. Christian Lux was

awarded the defensive player of the game.

In games played March 13:

* Vincent Galvez hit a home run in the first inning to start the

Costa Mesa National Minor A Diamondbacks on their way to a 16-3

victory over the Costa Mesa American Mariners.

Galvez’ 195-foot shot over the fence in left-center field helped

the D-backs

to a 4-0 first-inning lead. The D-backs were paced by the pitching

of Raymond Holmes, Chris Desoto and Christian Aquilar.

The defense was led by Brodie Pearce, Austin Aguilar, Jared

Payzant, Kyle Orton, Dylan Gaitan and Brian Stanley.

In Majors play:

* Giants 6, Padres 5:

Jesse Fox, Daniel Derieg, Eusebio Castillo and Gian-Paul Stebbins

led the Padres on the mound while Fox and Castillo added solid

fielding.

The Padres’ offense included an RBI bunt by Derieg, singles by

Fox, Ryan Barnett and Ryan Burns, and doubles by Stebbins and

Castillo.

In Minor B play:

* Padres 12, Cubs 7:

Hernandez was named Most Valuable Player for the Cubs for his

impressive pitching, recording five strikeouts in two innings.

Adam Ward and Chad Fackler each had two strikeouts in one inning.

Fewel had two hits, including a double, and scored a run.

Stone had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in

one. DeLaTorre pounded a double and scored. Fackler and Wisniewski

each went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

In Farm play:

* The Padres’ bats came alive, sending many hits to the outfield.

Dante Capoccia led the surge with a five-hit performance,

including three

doubles and five runs scored, earning him the game ball.

His supporting cast included some fine hitting by Tyler Owens (6

for 6, three doubles, four runs), William Reed (6 for 6, four runs),

Christian Darrow (4 for 6, three doubles, four RBIs) and Garrett

Deutsch (5 for 5, triple, five RBIs).

In addition to getting two hits, Harrison Stern continued his fine

defensive play, tallying three putouts at pitcher and second base.

Owens also displayed his defensive skills from third base and first

base, teaming up with Deutsch to record key outs.

Ted Zoerner got his first hit of the season, a single in the fifth

inning.

* Nicholas Halloran blasted his first home run of the season as

the Reds battled the Giants.

Wyatt Kanocz added a single in the fifth to go with two singles by

Kyle Kutter -- in his first year of baseball. Jackson Letterman, Chad

Crivello and Adam Ditt all made some key plays.

Garet Henscheid, Garrett Kahre, Junior Ozuna, Marco Perez, Mason

Tufuga and Halloran added to the offense while Nikalas Arias’ RBI in

the sixth capped the Reds’ scoring.

In T-Ball Minor action:

* The Marlins took on the Dodgers in their second game of the

season.

The Marlins awarded Jarod Adkins with the best hustle award. Colin

Gardnes made the play of the game and Riley Lord was the defensive

player of the game.

Offensive player of the game honors went to Logan Twardowski and

the Zachery Arceyut was named best listener.

* The Angels’ Kelsey Picco brought in three runs with a hit

against the Mariners. Wyatt Semas, C.J. Mino and Andrew Vaca all

scored.

Carter Chapman caught a fly and threw to first baseman Austin

Bates.

Julian Jackson, Fabian Munoz and Ryan Lether showed great hustle.

Paul King slid hard into first.

Alex and Chandler Pearce hope to return for the next game.
