Senior Joel Walker headed in a cross from Will Guzman in the final

minute to give the Newport Harbor High boys soccer team a thrilling

2-1 Sea View League victory over visiting Laguna Hills Friday.

The Sailors (14-5, 7-2 in league) maintained their slim hold on

the league lead heading into the regular-season finale against host

Woodbridge (5-2-2 in league) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Woodbridge defeated

Foothill, 1-0, Friday, giving both teams identical league records.

Newport is two points ahead of both Woodbridge and Foothill

(league rules allot two points for a win and one for a tie).

Skyler Taugher dribbled around the Hawks’ goalkeeper to give the

Tars a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

Taylor Carver made five saves and sweeper Chase Kelly, along with

David Manchester, controlled the defense, Newport Coach Ryan

Hernandez said.

Sea Kings in semifinals

* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team

advanced to the semifinals of the Irvine Southern California

championships with a 5-4 victory over Long Beach Wilson Friday at

CdM.

The Sea Kings (15-7) will face Santa Barbara today at 10 a.m. in a

semifinal at CdM. Corona trailed, 3-2, at halftime, but Vivian Liao

(two goals) scored in the third quarter to tie it up. Jordan Anae and

Katya Eadington (two goals) also found the back of the cage in a

44-second span in the fourth quarter, as the Sea Kings grabbed a 5-3

lead. Wilson scored with 50 seconds left, but CdM held off the

Bruins.

Junior goalie Brittany Fullen recorded six saves for the Sea

Kings.

Carrillo leads Coast

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Alisa Carrillo scored a game-high 28

points, grabbed 11 rebounds and recorded five steals, leading the

Orange Coast College women’s basketball team to a 73-49 Orange Empire

Conference victory over visiting Golden West Friday.

Freshman Rhondi Naff added 13 points, seven rebounds and five

assists, while Lauren Stepanski collected nine boards and scored

seven points.

OCC (12-12, 5-5 in conference) jumped out to a 39-15, by shooting

14 of 26 from the field (53.8%). Monique Cruz scored 12 points to

lead the Rustlers (11-11, 3-7).

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team capped

a critical week with a 78-50 Pacific Coast League win over visiting

Calvary Chapel Friday night.

The win, on the heels of Wednesday’s upset of University, improved

the Sea Kings to 13-12, 4-5 in league.

Seniors Jay Northridge (22) and Pancho Seaborn combined for 39

points and nine three-pointers to pace Coach Ryan Curry’s squad,

which also got 10 points from Adam Freede.

Newport Harbor High girls water polo team to a 15-7 win over Coronado

in the Irvine Southern California tournament Friday.

Newport Harbor (20-2) advances to today’s semifinal against Sea

View League rival Foothill.

Sage trounces Eagles

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team thumped

Academy League host Capistrano Valley Christian, 49-17, Friday to

remain in contention for one of the league’s three guaranteed CIF

Southern Section playoff berths.

Katie Puishys and Haywood Wright scored 13 and 10 points,

respectively, to help the Lightning (9-9, 4-4 in league) rally from a

6-5 first-quarter deficit.

Sage Hill enters the final two games of the regular season in

fourth place, needing wins Tuesday at home against Whitney and

Wednesday at Oxford Academy to help its postseason push.

Lightning win big, 6-1

* SOCCER: Ali McLaughlin and Megan Curry each scored two goals to

power the Sage Hill School girls soccer team to a 6-1 Academy League victory over visiting Capistrano Valley Christian Friday.

Emily Webb and Grace Graham scored one goal each for Sage Hill

(7-6-2, 3-4-1 in league) which remained in third place in league with

two games remaining.

Kendra Bostwick and Laura Gordon made four and three saves,

respectively, for Sage while Amy Werblin tallied two assists.

Coast ends long skid

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Aaron Bobik scored 21 points while Jason

Sanford tallied 18 as the Orange Coast College men’s basketball team

snapped a six-game losing streak with an 89-84 Orange Empire

Conference victory over visiting Golden West Friday night.

Jason Garey scored 10 points while David Seifert added nine in a

game where eight players -- five from Coast -- fouled out. Alex

Hunter and Matt Hatch each scored eight for Coast (5-17, 2-8 in the

OEC), which defeated Golden West, 85-77, Jan. 14, for its only other

conference win.

Sage Hill blanks CVC

* SOCCER: Visiting Sage Hill School manhandled Capistrano Valley

Christian for a 3-0 Academy League boys soccer victory Friday at the

Eagles’ off-campus field in San Juan Capistrano.

Freshman Conrad Whitaker opened the scoring for the winners

(9-5-0, 7-1-0 in league), who got their second first-half goal from

freshman Richard Gadbois, on an assist from sophomore Zack Milder.

Senior Cesar Arriaga, who opened the game in goal, scored his

second goal of the season to finalize things in the second half,

after failing to face a shot before joining his teammates in the

field.

Senior Jordan Salinger made three saves in relief of Arriaga.

The Lightning, who can clinch at least a share of the league crown

with two wins next week, play host to Whitney Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.,

before finishing the regular season Thursday at Oxford Academy.

They entered Friday tied for first place with four-time-defending

league champion St. Margaret’s.

Toros triumph at VU

* BASEBALL: Visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills had multiple-hit

games from six players to help the Toros defeat Vanguard University,

6-2, in a nonconference baseball game Friday.

Freshman left fielder Adam Yoder and junior shortstop Mike Sparks

had two hits apiece for Vanguard (1-2), which scored both its runs in

the seventh.

Dominguez Hills (2-2) scored twice in the second and seventh and

added single tallies in the eighth and ninth to hand Lion

right-hander Jason Searle the loss in his first start of the season.

Searle, who struck out five in 6 1/3 innings, allowed nine of the

Toros’ 17 hits.

Hawks humble Sailors

* BASKETBALL: The visiting Laguna Hills High boys basketball team

used a 29-8 second-half run to shock Newport Harbor, 56-36, in a Sea

View League game Friday.

Brock Tillotson scored a game-high 20 points for the Hawks, who

trailed, 28-27, at halftime.

Junior Taylor Young led the Tars with 13 points while Rafael

Mouradyan tallied 11. Dennis Heenan scored six points while Brett

Perrine and Greg Gausewitz each added two.

Newport (14-10, 5-4) entered Friday in a second-place tie with

Aliso Niguel (5-3), one game ahead of Foothill (4-4), which faced

league-champion Woodbridge.

Lightning fade in loss

* BASKETBALL: Sage Hill School senior Kevin Joyce scored 13 of his

game-high 23 points in the third quarter, to turn a 21-20 halftime

deficit into a 40-34 lead. But host Capistrano Valley Christian

answered back to claim a 55-44 Academy League boys basketball win

Friday.

Joyce’s heroics came despite limping after sustaining a deep thigh

bruise early in the first half.

Sage fell to 9-12, 1-4.

‘Eaters fall to UCSB

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Jimmy Pelzel slammed 25 kills for the

ninth-ranked UC Irvine men’s volleyball team, but host UC Santa

Barbara, No. 8 in the nation, still earned a 30-27, 30-24, 24-30,

34-32 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Friday night.

Spencer Bemus tallied 13 kills while Paul Spittle added 12 for the

Anteaters (5-7, 2-5 in the MPSF). Greg Ford had 15 digs while Brett

Ried tallied 43 assists.

Michael Kennedy tallied nine block assists for the Gauchos (6-4,

3-3).

UCI baseball bash

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball program will host its annual

Baseball Bash Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark.

The event is free for everyone and will feature an introduction of

the team, a home run derby and an autograph signing session.

The gates open at 12:30 and on-field events include taking a turn

in the batting cages, speed pitch, accuracy pitch and the 40-yard

dash.

All fans are welcome to participate, but are asked to bring their

own bat, helmet and glove.

Participants can’t wear open-toe shoes and non-participants

wearing high heels will not be allowed on the field.
