Late free throws sink Laguna NJB team
The Laguna Beach National Junior Basketball Division 3 team saw its
win streak snapped in the final 15 seconds of its game against
Trabuco Hills.
The Breakers were in the contest right up to the end, but Trabuco
Hills hit nine of 11 free throws down the stretch to pull out a 33-30
victory on their home floor.
Laguna, led by the play of Larry Stewart, Jake Dalke and Remington
Zona, took a 14-13 halftime lead in a defensive first half by both
teams.
In the third quarter, Laguna managed just one basket from the
floor, a two-point shot by Jake Pillsbury. The Spurs, taking
advantage of Breakers turnovers and missed shots, forged a 21-18 lead
through three quarters.
Laguna fought back in the fourth and clung to a three-point lead
with three minutes to play.
The Breakers were down, 31-30, following two Santi Pierini free
throws and a basket by Andrew Jensen. With 30 seconds to play, Brogan
O’Bryan came up with a steal to give Laguna one last chance.
An inbounds pass under the basket, however, was stolen by the
Spurs.
Trabuco Hills scored all but two of its 11, fourth quarter points,
from the foul line.
Laguna, now 6-3 overall, returns to Trabuco Hills High Sunday for
a 12:30 p.m. game.
