Portable toilets catch fire, damage offices
A single-alarm fire on Wednesday night caused structural damage to
two office buildings in the 800 block of West 18th Street, Costa Mesa
fire officials said.
Firefighters who responded to the call saw several portable
toilets between the two buildings on fire, Battalion Chief Scott
Broussard said. Flames were shooting up to 10 feet above the
buildings, he said. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, minimizing
damage to adjacent structures. No one was injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials did not
have an estimate of the damage caused by the fire.
Man tries to free bar-goer from police
Newport Beach police arrested a 24-year-old man on Sunday after he
opened the door of a police car to “rescue” another man who was
arrested on suspicion of assaulting someone in a bar, officials said.
Joshua Flatla and Jesse Larson, 25, both of Newport Beach, were at
Rudy’s bar and restaurant in the 3100 block of Newport Boulevard at
about 1:50 a.m., Sgt. Steve Shulman said.
“Our officers responded to a whole bunch of people involved in a
physical fight,” he said.
In the end, Larson was arrested and made to sit in a police car,
Shulman said. Flatla walked up to the car and opened the door for
Larson, who couldn’t let himself out because the rear doors of patrol
cars don’t open from the inside, Shulman said.
Officers then arrested Flatla on suspicion of aiding rescue of a
prisoner. Both Flatla and Larson were booked at Orange County Jail
and were released after posting bail.
