The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will get its final pre-conference

tuneup tonight at 8 at Sacramento State.

The Anteaters (5-3) enter the Hornets Nest on a three-game winning

streak, hoping to extend Sacramento’s losing skid to five games.

Coach Pat Douglass’ Anteaters, who open Big West Conference play

Jan. 3 at home against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, have four players

with double-figure scoring averages.

Senior forward Stanislav Zuzak (13.6 points per game) leads the

way, followed by sophomore guard Mike Efevberha (12.3), senior center

Adam Parada (11.6) and sophomore point guard Jeff Glover (103).

Gloger also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists per

contest.

OCC in semifinals

* BASKETBALL: Alisa Carrillo scored 22 points to lead the Orange

Coast College women’s basketball team to a 71-65 victory over San

Diego Mesa in the first round of the Pirates’ Coast Christmas Classic

Friday.

Carrillo also grabbed nine rebounds, while Charlenda Van Buren

collected 12 boards. Amy Shaw and Rhondi Naff scored 12, and 10

points, respectively, for the Pirates (6-5), the defending state

champions.

* BASKETBALL: Senior Jamie Diefenbach scored a game-high 20 points

and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Newport Harbor High boys

basketball team to a 55-44 victory over Katella in a 13th-place

semifinal of the Anaheim Convention Center tournament Friday at

Kennedy High.

Newport junior Taylor Young added 12 points, while junior Brett

Perrine contributed nine points and eight rebounds for the Sailors

(6-3).

Seaborn paces Sea Kings

* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High senior guard Pancho Seaborn

continued his hot shooting from the perimeter to lead the Sea Kings

to an 80-44 victory over Lompoc Friday in the third round of pool

play at the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Seaborn, who drained six three-pointers Thursday, netted five more

Friday, en route to a game-high 22 points. Jay Northridge added 15

for the winners (4-4), while Kevin Welch (12) and Ryan Lance (11)

also tallied double figures.

* BASKETBALL: Full-court pressure and some perimeter sharpshooting

helped the Estancia High boys basketball team roll to a 52-25 victory

over Oxford Academy in the consolation semifinals of the Garden Grove

tournament Friday at Garden Grove High.

Carlos Pinto had 15 points and Mike McDaniels 12 to lead the

Eagles, who play Dana Hills today at 11:30 a.m. for the consolation

crown.

Saints rally past Mesa

* SOCCER: Host Costa Mesa High scored first in its Golden West

League boys soccer clash with Santa Ana Friday, but the Saints

rallied for a 2-1 victory.

Junior Audel Torres opened the scoring for the Mustangs (0-5, 0-2

in league), but Santa Ana tied the game, then took the lead in the

55th minute, Mesa Coach Eugene Day said.

The Mustangs return to action Dec. 26, when they meet Foothill in

a 9 a.m. pool-play game in the Trabuco Hills tournament at Trabuco

Hills High.

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team did not

match up well in height against Aliso Niguel and lost, 51-36, in a

ninth-place semifinal of the Anaheim Convention Center tournament at

Kennedy High Friday.

Sophomore Scott Knox led Costa Mesa with 20 points. He was 5 for

12 from behind the three-point line. Jeff Waldron added eight points

and seven rebounds

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost, 68-48,

to nonconference host San Jose State Friday. Christina Callaway led

the Anteaters (0-6) with 15 points and Kristen Green scored 13.

Tatiana Taylor scored a game-high 22 points for the Spartans (5-1).

Lighting win again

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Haywood Wright posted a triple-double, 16

points, 13 rebounds and 12 blocked shots, to lead Sage Hill School’s

girls basketball team to their fourth straight victory, 49-32, over

Mesrobian Thursday.

Sophomore guard Debbie Yoder-Lee added 18 points and five steals

for the Lighting (4-4), who will have a two-week break before

returning to action at Liberty Christian on Jan. 2.

Freshman Kaitlin Tyre added four steals, three assists and eight

rebounds for Sage Hill and Allison Gonzalez came up with eight

rebounds, six of them offensive.
