Cameron Chase scored the lone goal off a free kick from Calvin

Jhunjhnuwala and the Newport Sharks defeated Costa Mesa, 1-0, in the

boys under-14 championship game recently in AYSO Region 97 action.

Newport supplied many offensive threats by Taylor Davis, Andrew

Kaban, Taylor Allee, Ben Swift and Peter Nguyen.

The defense of Rex Nelson, Jhunjhnuwala, Kaban, Brandon Rowley,

Spencer Barratto, Tobin Olson and Steven Stoneman kept Costa Mesa

scoreless.

Cory Hanley sat out with a broken wrist and Rob Joslin had the

flu.

In girls under-10 action:

* Purple Panthers 4, Breakers 1:

The Panthers scored four unanswered goals after halftime -- three

in two overtime periods -- to claim the championship Nov. 25.

Panthers’ forward Bailey McDaniel tapped the ball into the net

with 30 seconds remaining to tie the score at 1, forcing overtime.

But she was not done.

Neither team scored in the first OT period, forcing a shootout.

The Panthers’ Sophia Evans and Leah Harper each scored goals to

give the Panthers the edge in the shootout. The stage was set for

McDaniel, who blasted a shot into the upper-left portion of the net,

sealing the victory for the Panthers despite strong play from

Breakers’ goalkeeper Christina Young. Young had blocked McDaniel’s

previous shot in the shootout, but an official flagged the goalkeeper

for moving before the shot, allowing McDaniel another attempt.

Panthers’ goalkeeper Merry Schneider also made a strong stop on a

sharply-hit ball.

Striker Meaghan Kay gave the Breakers a 1-0 lead in the first

half.

Alyson Delbrook and Robin Young each fired shots for the Breakers

in the shootout.

The Panthers won five playoff games, including four in four days.

McDaniel, Evans and Sami DeFeo provided consistent scoring

throughout the season while Harper and Schneider shared goaltending

duties.

Alison Palaferri and Hannah Walker controlled the midfield with

Logan Warwick, Allyson Hall and Katherine Deal limiting the

opposition’s shots.

The Breakers (12-3) were the only team to have five players

qualify for all-stars. The list includes Kay, Robin and Christina

Young, Alison Hayes and Delbrook.

Both the Panthers and Breakers will represent Region 97 in AYSO

area play.
