CdM falls to Katella
Playing without 5-foot-8 senior Lauren Snell, who was attending the
volleyball banquet, Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team was
outmanned against Katella and dropped a 42-34 nonleague game at home
Thursday.
The Sea Kings (0-2) took a 21-18 lead into halftime, but managed
just 13 points in the second half, including three in the third
quarter.
“We just came out a little flat from halftime,” CdM Coach Jim
Barkalow said. “That really hurt us.”
The Sea Kings also hurt themselves by shooting just 5 of 15 from
the free-throw line and committing a high number of turnovers. A lot
of that Barkalow attributed to the team’s youth. The Sea Kings have
five sophomores who play prominent roles.
Senior Sarah Stern led CdM with 10 points, while sophomore Allison
Long had three points and eight rebounds.
