The Breakers shut out the Goblins, 2-0, under the lights at Lions

Park to advance to the final in girls under-10 AYSO Region 97 soccer

playoff action Monday.

In the middle of the first half, goalkeeper Christina Young punted

the ball to forward Casey Duckworth, who worked the ball downfield to

score, giving the Breakers a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Breakers stacked defenders on the center line in the second

half to keep ball on the Goblins’ side.

Early in the second half, Breakers goalkeeper Meaghan Kay punted

over the defenders. Forward Alison Hayes received the ball and worked

around three defenders to kick the ball into the net from 18 yards.

* Breakers 3, Blue Crush 1:

The Breakers beat the Blue Crush, 3-1, in the girls under-10

division of AYSO Region 97 soccer playoffs on Nov. 22. Striker Kay

scored early in the first half on a pass from forward Hayes for the

Breaker lead. The Blue Crush came back to tie the game later in the

first half.

Early in the second half, Breaker forward Samantha Small passed to

forward Robin Young, who scored on a strong shot.

Late in the second half, forwards Christina Young and Robin Young

used the give-and-go to their advantage. Christina pounded the ball

into the back of the net to secure the victory. The Breakers

qualified for the quarterfinals against a wild card team.

* Breakers 3, Green Anoles 2:

On Sunday, the Breakers met the Green Anoles in a quarterfinal

match.

Kay scored early in the first half the give the Breakers a 1-0

lead.

In the second half, the Anoles came alive and Tempest Blaine

scored to tie the game.

In the fourth quarter, an Anoles defender touched the ball with

her hand, causing a direct kick on goal. Breakers sweeperback Alyson

Delbrook took the kick from the 18 yards out and pounded the ball

into the back of the net.

The Anoles came back and scored with two minutes remaining, tying

the game at the end of regulation.

The first sudden death overtime ended in a tie so a second

overtime was needed. A few minutes into the second overtime, Hayes

was knocked down, had her hand stepped on and was hurting. She

regained her composure and scored the game-winning goal after

receiving a corner kick from Robin Young.

In boys under-12 play:

* Fireballs 4, Raiders 2:

The Fireballs prevailed in an overtime shootout after a scoreless

tie following 70 minutes of regulation.

Jacob McCann, Shane Rocco, Justin Cerrato and Craig McKennon led

the Fireballs’ offense while Taylor Kass, Cody Peters, Logan Heath

and E.J. Kehoe anchored the defense.

Gavin Arblaster, Zach Buie, Jake Caughill and goalkeeper Simon

Hedrick provided support. Alex Authur provided encouragement from the

sideline after sustaining a midseason injury.

In girls under-11 action:

* Newport 0, Yorba Linda 0:

Newport outshot Yorba Linda, 16-5, but could not get one in the

net. Amy Kanotz found the back of the net with a 15-yard shot in the

fourth quarter, but the referee didn’t allow the goal because the

Yorba Linda goalkeeper was lying on the ground with a possible

injury.

Lauren Grupe, Blakeley Ficenec, Tori Sarris, Claire Silva, Beth

Barnard and Mary Yeager fired shots for three quarters.

Kiana Whipple and Chelsea Barth were strong in the midfield.

Natalie Swift made a strong defensive play when she chased down

and cleared a Yorba Linda shot headed toward the goal.

Veronica McLean and Hannah McLeod played well in goal with Gwen

Gaylord and Sadye Busby leading the defense.
