Twin sisters Hayley Young and Miranda Young of Newport Beach advanced

to today’s doubles quarterfinals with an 8-3 victory over Nicole

Adams (Los Altos) and Donna McCullough (Fremont) on Friday in the

Round of 16 in the United States Tennis Association national girls

16s open championships at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The Young sisters, who are freshmen at Corona del Mar High, are

unseeded in the tournament and will square off against fourth-seeded

Emily Aston and Megan Kiser, both of Rancho Palos Verdes, at 2 p.m.

today in the quarters.

In singles action involving local girls, CdM’s Jill Damion

defeated Kimberly Haynes of San Diego, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round,

then lost to second-seeded Stephanie Davison of Port Orchard, Wash.,

7-6, retired (ill).

Hayley Young lost in the first round to San Jose’s Jovana Pavisic,

6-1, 6-3.

Anteaters win again

* VOLLEYBALL: Coach Charlie Brande’s UC Irvine women’s volleyball

team defeated San Jose State, 30-26, 30-19, 26-30, 30-21, at the

Baden Thanksgiving tournament Saturday at Long Beach State.

Outside hitter Kelly Wing led all players with 31 kills, while

opposite Dana Kurzbard (13 kills) and middle blocker Sami Cash (11)

played well. Terbrie Taylor had 10 kills for UCI.

The Anteaters (22-9), who set a school record for wins in a

season, will cap their regular season at 3:30 p.m. today against

Texas-Christian at the Pyramid.

Stanford tops UC Irvine

* WATER POLO: Junior Tony Azevedo scored four goals to lead

second-seeded Stanford past No. 7 UC Irvine, 9-5, in the first round

of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo tournament

at Belmont Plaza Friday night.

After a 4-3 halftime lead, Stanford opened the third quarter with

consecutive goals by Peter Varellas, Sam Tyre and Tyler Drake to

build a 7-3 margin before UCI closed to within 7-5 on goals by Phil

Garcia and Dan Noon. Stanford received a pair of unanswered goals in

the fourth quarter by Thomas Hopkins and Tony Azevedo to provide the

final score.

Sophomore goalie Chad Taylor had 16 saves for the Cardinal, which

has won 12 straight games en route to a 20-3 record. Sophomore Joe

Wynne had eight stops for the Anteaters (12-15).

UCI faces Pepperdine in a consolation semifinal at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday.

VU pulls out thriller

* BASKETBALL: The host Vanguard University men’s basketball team

held on for a 61-60 nonconference victory over the University of Mary

(North Dakota) Saturday night.

The Lions, who let a 17-point halftime lead slip away after the

Marauders pulled to within 47-46 with 8:45 left, sealed the win with

11 seconds to play on Horace Wormely’s layup, which gave VU a 61-57

edge. Mary’s Jamaal Smith, who scored a team-high 19 points,

converted a three-point play with three seconds on the clock.

Brian Kim paced Vanguard with 21 points and two steals, while

Brett McGee (12 points), Kevin Dalafu (10) and Wormely (10) also

reached double digits in scoring for the Lions. McGee had seven

rebounds.

Vanguard (4-3) will play at La Verne on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in

nonconference action. Mary fell to 4-2.

OCC men, women split

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team lost

to L.A. City, 59-44, in the first round of the Citrus tournament

Saturday, while the OCC women defeated Taft, 77-68, in the opening

round of the Ventura tournament.

UCI’s Won earns honor

* GOLF: UC Irvine sophomore Angela Won has been named Big West

Conference Golf Female Athlete of the Month.

Won finished third at the Kent Youel Invitational, her second

top-10 finish of the season. Won shot a 221 in three rounds,

including a 72 in the final round.

Sailors defeat Calvary

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team closed out the Sea

View League regular season with a 98-70 victory over Calvary Chapel

Tuesday at Sunset Beach to remain undefeated in league.

Newport (8-1, 8-0 in league) won four of the five events and took

first place in seven of the eight heats. Joey Head, Rob Delorme,

Reagan Ritchie and Christian Morabito collected first-place finishes

in their respective heats in the boys short board competition.

The Sailors were 8-0 in the short board event this season, as they

also received contributions from Luke Sequeira, Steve Farmer and

Charlie Buckingham.

The boys long boarders were also 8-0 on the season. They were led

by Tanner Praire and Chase Smith. Matt Kretschmar guided the

bodyboard team to victory with a first-place finish, while Jill

Austin and Lisa Turk gave Newport the boost it needed to win the long

board competition.

Amie Benjamin finished second in the girls short board event.

The Sailors will compete in the league finals Tuesday at 56th

Street in Newport Beach.
