Marina High’s bid to win a boys’ CIF Southern Section water polo

championship came to an end against Sunset League rival Esperanza,

but not before the Vikings gave it their all -- and then some.

The host, Aztecs, got a game-winning goal from Vinny Bauerlein in

a third, sudden-death overtime period, the senior’s goal the

difference in an 8-7 game.

The match was tied on five occasions, the last time, at 7-7, when

the Aztecs took advantage of a man-up situation with Jon Beckman

scoring with 14 seconds left in the second overtime

Reed Honrath’s three goals led Marina, which ended its season

22-4.

The Vikings had opened the playoffs with a 15-6 rout of Empire

League champion Cypress, then eliminated Serra League champ Servite,

9-8, to set up a semifinal round meeting with Esperanza.

The Division II semifinal round featured three Sunset League

teams. Champion Los Alamitos, which edged Villa Park, 12-11 in one

sudden death overtime in the other semifinal, met Esperanza Monday in

the championship match.

In girls’ golf, Edison’s Jennie Lee tied for fourth with a 72

score at the CIF-Southern Section individual girls’ golf tournament

at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs.

Lee, along with Marina’s Jane Chin, qualified for Monday’s CIF

championships.
