Breakers win Halloween Haunt tourney
The HB Breakers, a local 12-and-under club baseball team, won the
Halloween Haunt tournament last weekend.
The Breakers went 5-0 and outscored their opponents, 36-11.
They defeated another Huntington Beach-based team, the Mizuno
Sluggers, 8-3, in the tournament final at Mile Square Park.
Kyle Ball, Josh Lesinski, Sean Guite, Kyle Boswell, Tyler Buckles
and Tony Giovinette provided outstanding pitching throughout the
tournament.
As a team, the Breakers batted .317 and had a .427 on-base average
in five games.
In two qualification games played Saturday night in Riverside,
with wildfires visible in the distant hills, the Breakers defeated
the Mission Viejo Bandits, 9-4, and rival HB Riptide, 4-0.
The Breakers pounded out nine hits against the Bandits, led by
Aaron Ochoa’s home run, a triple by Boswell and a double by
Giovinette. Guite notched the pitching win.
In blanking the HB Riptide, Lesinski and Boswell dominated on the
mound, with Lesinski not allowing a hit in facing just 10 batters in
his three innings of work.
Boswell and Ochoa each had two hits and Boswell, Guite and Cody
Morad each drove in runs.
The tournament wrapped up Sunday at Mile Square Park in Fountain
Valley. The Breakers ripped the Saddleback Patriots, 11-1, in a
five-inning, mercy rule contest and in the semifinal round, edged the
Desert Valley Storm, 4-3, in 10 innings.
In the title game, they downed the Mizuno Sluggers, 8-3.
A five-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning put the
Breakers in control. Boswell and Lesinski each singled to start the
rally and, with bases loaded, Chris Lien hit an RBI single to tie the
game at 3-3.
Guite followed with a two-RBI single to give the Breakers a 5-3
advantage and Madden and Ball each had an RBI to complete the
five-run inning.
Ball and Guite combined pitching efforts for the Breakers in the
title game.
