Oilers, Chargers host Halloween bashes Friday
TONIGHT’S GAMES
Los Alamitos (6-1, 1-1) vs. Huntington Beach (2-5, 1-1)
(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)
Nobody -- save for, maybe, the Oilers -- saw Huntington’s stunning
14-10 victory over Esperanza, a team that had outscored its previous
four opponents, 182-13, coming last week.
But the Oilers used a punishing defensive effort to take advantage
of four turnovers and limit the Aztecs to a season low 10 points.
Not only did Huntington’s victory create a mad scramble in the
league race, but it also marked the first time since the 1999 season
that the Oilers have won in Sunset League play.
They’ll be facing a Los Alamitos team that is trying to rebound
from last week’s 21-16 upset loss to Fountain Valley. That defeat
ended a 20-game unbeaten streak for the Griffins.
Last year’s score: Griffins 42, Oilers 21
Edison (4-3, 1-1) vs. Esperanza (4-3, 1-1)
(at Valencia High, 7 p.m.)
If either team entertains hopes of winning the Sunset title, it
must win out the final three games of the season, beginning with this
game.
While Esperanza was getting upended at home by Huntington Beach,
Edison was squaring its league record at 1-1 with a 21-7 decision
over Marina. The Chargers’ Joshua Gage accounted for more than 150
yards of offense and Abel Cardona rushed for game-best 122 yards
against the Vikings.
Esperanza is led on offense by quarterback Grant Farrell, who has
thrown for 1,097 yards and 13 touchdowns in seven games. Cornerback
Eric Howell keys the Aztec defense.
Last year’s score: Aztecs 31, Chargers 14

FRIDAY’S GAMES
Santa Ana (4-3, 1-2) vs. Ocean View (1-6, 0-4)
(at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.)
Ocean View has found the road tough the past six weeks. The
Seahawks still don’t have Alex Hickerson back from a hamstring injury
he suffered in the second week of the season and have dropped
six-straight games since beating Santiago in the season opener.
Santa Ana won its first Golden West League game last week by
rallying past Estancia, 26-20. Saints quarterback Alex Gober threw
for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the victory.
Last year’s score: Saints 35, Seahawks 27
Marina (2-5, 0-2) vs. Fountain Valley (5-2, 2-0)
(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)
Fountain Valley has emerged as the only unbeaten team in the
Sunset as the league race reaches its midway point.
In the Barons’ 21-16 surprise of Los Alamitos, Kyle Feiler rushed
for two touchdowns and Kevin Gerard returned an interception 53 yards
for another score.
Marina played Edison tough in a 21-7 loss. Quarterback Matt
Brennan hit Brandon Brown with a 40-yard scoring pass for the
Vikings’ lone score.
The scoring drive was set up by Brown’s interception.
Last year’s score: Barons 21, Vikings 14 (OT)
