Newport cuts down Flowers, 5-3

Newport Beach’s boys under-16 soccer team received two goals each

from Jake Kalwitz and Isai Viveros to spur a 5-2 victory over the

South Irvine Flowers in AYSO Region 97 action last Saturday. Sergio

Rodriguez added another to cap the scoring for Newport.

Benjamin Pepic narrowly missed the goal from 18 yards out in the

final seconds.

David Garrett made some strong crosses with P.J. Baca controlling

the midfield.

Chris Lewis, Edgar Torres, Junior Rubio and Justin Whisler turned

away several Irvine offensive attacks.

Nick Normandin and Gary Guerrero added strong defense alongside

sweeper Daniel Gonzalez. Tommy Olson made several saves in goal.

In girls under-14 play:

* Newport Crush 1, Spiffinators 1:

The top two teams battled to a tie.

Brittany Sowers scored the lone goal for the Crush while Megan

Beauchamp and goalkeeper Nichole Horlick added strong defense. Nikki

Liddicote scored the Spiffinators’ lone goal.

Laura Catron and Lauren McGill anchored the Spiffinators’ goal

with Desiree Alexander, Alexandra McIntosh, Alyssa Lee, Katherine

Sanders, Haley Willard and Linda Freeman providing additional

support.

In girls under-12 play:

* The Beach Babes lost, 4-2, but maintained effort throughout

their game.

Stephanie Storch and Kelly Rorden provided strong goalkeeping

while Whitley Peters made some accurate throw-ins.

Patty Moddelmog and Lindsey Larson led the defense with strong

offensive moves made by Maddy Storch and Bryn Wensley.

Lindsay Ricker switched from defender to forward in the second

half and added a goal.

In girls under-10 action:

* Blue Crush (Light) 3, Blue Crush (Dark) 2:

Courtney Buck scored all three goals for Blue Crush Light in the

win. Jamie Searles, Savanna Gastineau and Morgan Donahue provided the

assists. Gastineau made two diving saves in goal during the fourth

quarter to preserve the lead.

Ana Figueroa and Kendall Walker played tough defense.

Kyla Kerr and Devin Donahue kept the ball away from the goal and

Shannon Barth made a valiant attempt to save a corner kick.

Sweeper Brinley Siemonsma covered much of the field.

* Breakers 3, Green Anoles 0:

The Breakers recorded their second shutout of the season with the

win.

Striker Meaghan Kay scored first with Casey Duckworth adding he

second goal of the season to give the Breakers a 2-0 lead.

Christina Young moved from goalkeeper to striker in the second

half and took a pass from twin sister Robin Young to score the

Breakers’ final goal.

Forwards Alexandria Chandler and Alyson Delbrook kept the ball in

Anoles territory while backs Page Keys and Alison Hayes defended the

goal well.

Duckworth, Sidney Groves, Samantha Small and Katie Calder used

spin moves to keep the ball out of Breakers’ territory.

* Fireballs 3, Fighting Pickles 0:

The Fireballs (7-0) maintained their undefeated record while the

Fighting Pickles fell to 5-1-1.

Molly Anderson scored two goals while Rachel Vensand added one.

Christiana Jacques provided an assist.

Kirsten Rohan, Elyssa Barnett, Gianna Light and Morgan Long

provided strong midfield play with defensive efforts from Christine

Dupont and Kate Batstone.

Sofia Muscatello made three saves in goal while Ailani Hause added

one.

* Flames 5, Red Hot Chili Peppers 5:

The Flames received two goals from Kelsey Long and single tallies

from Jane Layton, Sara Bradbury and Erika Wolf.

Megan Bathen, Katty Ayala, Holly Kelly and Dylan Alexander added

strong offensive play.

Rachal Gray and Sydney Alexander led the defense for the Flames

(5-1-1).

In boys under-10 play:

* A.C. Milan 3, Atomic Fireballs 2:

Landon Gyulay scored twice with a single goal from Ryan Cerrato to

keep Milan undefeated.

The Fireballs scored first on a goal from Ryan Schroth, but Milan

answered with three straight before Ryan Fowler added a goal late in

the fourth quarter.

Defensive captain Nick McCann spearheaded the Milan defense with

help from Charlie Pena, True Tamplin and Christiana Franco.

Ian Baugh made several strong saves for Milan (6-0-1) while

midfielders Willie Pyle, Sam Sykes, Max Johnson and Kyle Regan

controlled most of the game.

* Silver Wolves 6, Blue Meteors 0:

Caleb Candelaria scored three goals while Robert Boullon added two

to lead the Silver Wolves to their first shutout this season. Casey

Shearer added one goal.

Nathan Mayhugh led the defense with Clay Smyth anchoring the

midfield.

Jason Wooding also kept the ball out of Silver Wolves’ territory.

Cody Lippman played his strongest game of the year.

* Toxic Fumes 5, Green Vipers 0:

The Toxic Fumes maintained their undefeated status with Vince

Aqueveque and Hamilton Randle scoring two goals each.

Stevie Michaelson scored in the final seconds.

Offensive help was given by Nick Sargeant, Cullen Jeheber, Teddy

Barry and Jacob Carney.

Marco Martinez, Tristan Palmer, Tynan Yanaga, Connor Mullin and

goalkeeper Luke Rockwell also helped in the shutout.

In boys under-8 action:

* Sean Cox scored three goals to lead the Blue B-1 Bombers against

the Red Dragons.

Bobby Kearns and Garrett Hall added single goals for the Bombers

and also provided assists on Cox’s goals.

Bombers’ goalkeeper Sam Masarik made strong saves with help from

fullbacks Jake Sandburg and Brendan Hefner, along with halfbacks Zack

Diamond and Sam Jones.

* Eli Botros opened the scoring for the Green Goblins with a

breakaway goal against the Hammerheads with additional offensive

pressure provided by Chas Beck, Joey Gregory and Andrew Dimas.

Marc Gehlke, Wil Crook and Jake Farwell played a stifling defense,

seldom allowing the Hammerheads goals.

Buddy Mitchell played well in goal.

In girls under-7 action:

* The Red and White Firecrackers received two goals from Libby

Knight against the Chicks that Kick. Knight dribbled through three

defenders and blasted the shot under the Chicks’ goalkeeper’s

outstretched hand for her second goal.

Bryn Crowell added a goal in the second quarter, scoring on a

left-footed boot.

Ryan Moncrief and Kira Wandrocke also contributed offensively with

Amanda Brown and Miranda Hart leading the defense.

Riley Alexander and Reagan Rutter denied Chicks’ penetration for

much of the first half.

Goalkeeper Sierra Page held the Chicks scoreless in the first

half.

* The Fireflies were forced to play their parents when the other

team failed to show.

Emily Wolfe, Annie LaGrandeur, Alex Vasquez, Brooke Netzer,

birthday girl Baylee Kneip, Erin Wilson, Delanie Gastineau and Nicole

Carlin produced five goals to the parents’ one.

Gary Vasquez, Scott Wilson and Susie Gastineau played as honorary

Fireflies and kept the game at a fast pace.

The parents, playing barefooted, began to move the ball in the

second half with help from Tom and Kate LaGrandeur, Jim Netzer,

Christy Wilson, Kevin Wolfe, Cheryl Carlin and Coach Doug Gastineau.

* Mallory Gyulay scored twice and MacKenzie Gaddis added another

goal for the Hula Girls against the Flaming Flowers.

Kierstyn Yardley and Kate Yasko provided strong offense with Gabby

Shelley adding backfield help.

Goalkeeper Brittany Welsh turned away several shots in the fourth

quarter.

* Olivia Sever had a goal for the Groovy Girls in their game

against the Surfer Girls.

Sabrina Sanchez and Ali Willson fired some shots on goal with Dani

DeSantis moving the ball down field.

Goalkeeper Tess Alexander made several saves.

In boys under-7 action:

* Jack Binford and Baron Davis had their best games of the year

for the Orange and Black Tigers against the Green Vipers.

Binford scored three goals with Davis tallying one goal and adding

several defensive stops.

David Hartman added his first goal of the season, on a throw-in

from Ryan Braun, and also tallied one assist.

Landon Knight and Griffith Clawson each made strong passes which

led to shots on goal while William Johnson and Thomas Quinn each made

several saves in goal.

* Peter Goodman scored one goal and added several saves for the

Blue Flames against the Blue Fireballs.

Erick Pineda and James Porter made many side tackles while Grant

Fuchs and Will Hickman led attacks on goal.

John Drayton, Jack Heald and Jimmy Preston made several saves in

goal with Elliot Frye adding strong offense and defense.

In girls under-6 action:

* Jaci DeFeo, Emma Vujnovich and Megan Keys all scored goals for

the Cherry Bombs against the Ladybugs.

Gigi Woodall, Emma Buggeln and Emily Fletcher sparked the Cherry

Bomb defense.

* Jessy Rath scored a goal on a breakaway with assists from Hannah

Peters and Zoe Conley for the Dragonflies against the Ladybugs.

Katie Kearns later scored with an assist by Lauren Bibb for the

Ladybugs before McKenzie Porteous led the drive for a goal with

assists from Chloe Schilling and Jasmine Machuca.

In boys under-6 action:

* The Blue Sharks battled the Green Hornets despite being two

players short.

Cade Clement scored three goals while Kevon Andonian (his first of

the season) and Jack McClintock each added single scores for the

Sharks.

Spike Stoneman and R.J. Reid also played well on offense, taking

control of the ball for most of the fourth quarter.

Andonian added a steal while Clement and McClintock made several

saves in goal.

Reid and Stoneman denied a number of Green Hornet attacks.

* Shark defenders Jake Duerhing, Hunter Ficenec, Shane Mitchell

and Dillon Murphy kept the Giants from scoring in a shootout.

Corbin Joyce fed passes to forwards Ryan Young and Kyle Moran to

lead a strong offensive attack.

* Matthew Brodie scored the Blue Dolphins’ lone goal while Andrew

Laidlaw led the Men in Black with two goals. Jeremiah Sheldon and

David Fisher added single goals for the Men in Black.

Chase Braun, Cooper Hendrix, Brodie, Max Peterson and Phoenix

Smith displayed strong defense.
