Waves down ‘Eaters, 11-6
Jesse Smith and Josh Acosta scored three goals each to lead No. 3
Pepperdine past eighth-ranked UC Irvine, 11-6, in a nonconference
men’s water polo game at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu
Saturday.
Smith scored two of his goals in the first quarter as the Waves
(10-2) built a 4-1 lead after one period. UCI’s Phil Garcia scored
both of his goals in the second quarter as the Anteaters (8-9)
outscored Pepperdine 3-1 in that session to draw within 5-4 at
halftime. Two goals by Acosta then led a 4-1 outburst by the Waves in
the third period as Pepperdine took charge in the second half.
In addition to Garcia, Dan Noon and Rick Merlo also scored two
goals each for UCI. The Anteaters open Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation action hosting Long Beach State at noon Oct. 19 at the
Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Newport splits at S&R;
* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor High’s boys water polo team took
seventh place with an 8-5 victory over San Clemente in the S&R;
tournament at Corona del Mar High Saturday.
The Sailors (6-7) received three goals from Michael Bury while
Brett Auer and Morgan Laidlaw each scored twice. Trevor Gregory added
a single goal. Goalkeeper Michael Robinson made 11 saves.
Newport lost to Long Beach Wilson, 12-9, earlier Saturday.
Wilson led at halftime, 8-3, making the comeback difficult for
Newport. Auer and Laidlaw each scored three goals while Bury added
two and Griffin Gentry found the net once. Robinson made nine saves.

CdM goes 1-1 at tourney
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team split
both of its games in the S&R; tournament Saturday at Tustin High to
conclude the event.
The Sea Kings (5-11) defeated Acalenes, 15-5, using three goals
each by Tom Money, Thomas Pearson and Bryan Buhagiar. Jacob Murphy
and Spencer Pirdy each scored twice while James Blackford and Kyle
Hersh added single goals. Gaston Sanford made six saves while
Chandler Anthony stopped three shots. Blackford added three assists
and one steal while Hersh made two steals to go with two assists.
CdM trailed, 5-3, after one period against Clovis West, but
couldn’t mount a comeback and lost, 10-6.
Pearson led the Sea Kings with two goals while Pirdy, Daniel
Niehenke and Travis Hersh found the cage twice. Sanford made six
saves and three steals. Pirdy made three steals and Niehenke added
four.

DePaul breaks mark
* SWIMMING AND DIVING: The UC Irvine Anteaters began their
2003-2004 season while hosting the annual Blue/Gold Meet at the
Anteater Aquatics Complex on Saturday. One school record and many
meet records were broken on the day. Freshman Ashley DePaul broke the
UCI record in the 100 fly with a time of 57.41 to highlight the meet
for the ‘Eaters.
UCI duo reach semis
* TENNIS: The 40th-ranked doubles team of UC Irvine senior Jon
Endrikat and junior Brian Morton (Corona del Mar High) lost to the
second-ranked duo of Texas A&M;’s Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic, 8-5,
in the semifinals of the ITA/All-American Championships in Lupton
City, Tenn., on Saturday.
Earlier Saturday, Endrikat and Morton defeated 13th-ranked Calle
Hansen and Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, 8-3, in the quarterfinals.
Thune leads Vanguard
* CROSS COUNTRY: Vanguard University’s Jenny Thune finished fourth
among 158 runners Saturday in 18:52 as the Lions’ women’s cross
country team placed seventh out of 14 teams in the VU Invitational at
Fairview Park.
Elizabeth Huipe (Estancia) cut 61 seconds off her course time from
a year ago, finishing 16th in 19:31, VU’s second-best mark. Christol
McDonald (21:13), Bridget Lonsdale (21:26) and Jessica Saxton (24:07)
rounded out the VU scorers.
Cal State San Marcos, ranked fourth in the NAIA, won both the
men’s and women’s races.
On the men’s side, VU placed fifth as Tony Magana (Estancia)
placed 11th in 26:36, the Lions’ best finish. Erick Garcia (27:09),
Mikael Larsson (27:18), Robbie Jones (27:53) and Matt Meyer (28:27)
wrapped up the VU scoring runners.
Sage Hill stays unbeaten
* TENNIS: Sarah Geocaris and Stephanie Langer, both freshman, each
swept their three singles sets Friday to lead Sage Hill (8-3, 6-0 in
league) to a 13-5 Academy League victory over Capistrano Valley
Christian.
Whiffle ball tourney set
* WHIFFLE BALL: Gary Almquist, the wrestling and freshmen football
coach at Corona del Mar High, will be directing a 16-team whiffle
ball tournament in the CdM gyms from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Each team is to have at least one female of its five players. The
