Suns soar to title in championship

The Suns, a fifth-grade summer basketball team from Costa Mesa,

defeated the Lakers, 33-28, to claim the Boys & Girls Club league

championship at the Lou Yantorn branch

The Suns jumped to a 28-11 lead after three quarters and withstood

a fourth-quarter comeback by the Lakers to prevail. Half-court

man-to-man defense, along with an effective press, helped the Suns to

victory.

Jason Cernius led the Suns (9-0) with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting

while Malcolm Faigen and Chris Whitelegge each tallied six points.

Alex Jolly, Kellon Truxton, Cody Peters and Taylor Sims each made

contributions with strong scoring, rebounding and defense.

Davis Brown, Cole McCrea and Buzzy Yokoyama led the Lakers (7-2)

in scoring.
