Fund-raising walk set for paralyzed 5-year-old
The second Walk for Leilani will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug.
24 at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.
Leilani Gutierrez, 5, was left paralyzed from the neck down after
a traffic accident last year.
Leilani came out of a coma last year and is now undergoing
extensive physiotherapy. She will start kindergarten this fall at
Newport Heights Elementary School.
Proceeds from the walk will help Leilani’s family pay for medical
expenses and to buy her an electric wheelchair that can be controlled
with her mouth.

It’s time to dispose of large items
The annual Large Item Collection Program is in progress for
residents of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana Heights using curbside trash
collection.
Residents can dispose of items too large or bulky for their trash
containers. Large items such as water heaters, washers, dryers,
refrigerators, carpeting and furniture will be collected and recycled
or disposed of at no cost to the resident.
The program runs through the week of Aug. 25. A list of groups
accepting donations is available by calling (949) 646-4617 or
checking the yellow pages under the heading of “Thrift Stores.”
Meeting set to discuss dinghy storage plan
A public meeting on a proposed dinghy storage plan is scheduled
from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Fire Conference Room at Newport
Beach City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.
Residents are invited to give their input on a plan to build racks
at eight public locations where holders of offshore mooring permits
can store the dinghies that boaters use to get to their boats.
