Duesler advances to final
Bob Duesler of Newport Beach received small, yet fair consolation
after losing a tight semifinal match in the men’s 65s singles of the
United States Tennis Association national 65s and 70s hard-court
championships at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach
Saturday.
Duesler lost to Bob Helton in a semifinal, 6-4, 7-5. He was
supposed to play in today’s third-place match, but Herman Ahlers of
Las Vegas defaulted because of injury in the other semifinal. Thus,
Duesler took third place in the tournament Saturday.
However, he will still play today, as he advanced to the
championship men’s 65s doubles final with teammate Jim Nelson of Palm
Desert. The duo defeated Jim Landin of Naples, Fla. and Leonard
Lindborg, 6-1, 6-4. Lindborg is the owner of the club.
Duesler and Nelson will face Bill Hyde of Tucson, Ariz., and Art
Wahl of Laguna Beach today at 1:30 p.m. for the championship. Hyde
and Wahl won, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in their semifinal to advance to today’s
match.
